You may have visions of an adorable, Instagram-ready moment, of your child, but the experience can be traumatic. Here, are tips to get you through your baby's first haircut, without the tears.

Timings!

Schedule a haircut during a time that works best for your child. “Avoid scheduling it during nap or meal time on when the child is fussy.

DISTRACT, DISTRACT & DISTRACT

Let your kid bring his favorite toy or book to comfort him and keep him occupied.You may follow a "no screen time" rule at home but times like this, a video on your smartphone can be extremely helpful. If your child isn't comfortable sitting on his own and is a wiggle worm, then have him sit on your lap. This will bring a lot of comfort for the child.

A bribe won't hurt either!! You never know it might work!

Have them watch you have a trim

Familiarize your kid with the salon experience beforehand. Bring the child for your own trim or to an older sibling’s haircut. Hopefully this will get the child excited about his own haircut someday. This will also take away some of the scary factor.

Another option is to arrive at the salon a little early so your child can see other people getting haircuts.

Pretend Play

Incorporate a haircut into regular playtime, with a cape, water spritz, safety scissors (or imaginary) and a special chair. Familiarizing your child with these steps of the process will ease the stress of the actual experience.

Right Choice of words

The word “cut” can be scary, so try using words like “snip”, “snap” or “trim” instead.

Facing Away!

A kid-friendly salon will have plenty of distractions, experience and patience cutting your kids hair. But some children will still get freaked having a stranger around their head (even if they’re sitting in a super-cool mini car). Try facing your kid face away from the mirror.

Compliment! Hug them!!

Tell your child “great job” for making their first haircut experience a great one. Look in the mirror with them and tell them how fantastic their new haircut looks. Associate positive feedback with the overall experience, even if there may have been bumps along the way. If you have a younger kiddo and compliments aren’t as easily understood, extra hugs can’t hurt!

Change of clothes

Your kid might refuse to wear the cape. Try telling her that she’ll look like a superhero with it on. So bring a spare set of clothes to change into afterward.

Your baby’s first haircut is an important milestone that can be exciting and stressful at the same time. With these tips, you’ll be a bit more prepared and a little less stressed for the occasion.
