Menstrual disorders are differ from pre-menstrual syndromes. Poor awareness and lack of treatment options, it takes patients 12 years and at least 6 healthcare practitioners before getting diagnosed. What has been your experience of getting a proper diagnosis?

Even as approximately 60 million women and individuals assigned female at birth are impacted by Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD), the menstrual disorder remains barely recognised in many parts of the country including India. As many as 34% patients suffering from PMDD attempted su***de, per a BMC Psychiatry study. However, owing to poor awareness and lack of treatment options, patients wait for 12 years and visit at least 6 healthcare practitioners before receiving a diagnosis, found the study.
The symptoms of PMDD include digestive distress, body aches, restlessness, anxiety, depression, catatonia, and irritability. Women living with PMDD often have their condition dismissed as pre-menstrual syndrome.
Further since the existing health system is androcentric, it fails to cater to the health needs of women. While doctors are required to undergo continuous evaluation and training to stay updated about diseases and line of treatments, most Indian doctors do not adhere to it. This further leads to the tendency of women’s health issues being dismissed, downplayed and undiagnosed.
Nikita Chatterjee ( writes about living with a severe clinical condition that affects the menstrual health but is dismissed, downplayed and left undiagnosed by healthcare practitioners leading her and other women like her to feel isolated.
