Can Ardha Shalabhasana help relieve lower back pain? Yes—when practiced correctly.
Ardha Shalabhasana (Half Locust Pose) strengthens the erector spinae, multifidus, gluteus maximus, hamstrings, and core muscles, which support and stabilize the lumbar spine. Stronger spinal muscles reduce mechanical stress on the lower back, improve posture, and increase spinal stability.
This pose also helps:
✅ Strengthen the lower back muscles
✅ Improve posture and spinal alignment
✅ Increase blood circulation to the lumbar region
✅ Reduce muscle stiffness and fatigue
✅ Improve core stability and functional movement
How to do it: • Lie on your stomach with both legs straight.
• Keep your arms beside your body or under your thighs.
• Inhale and slowly lift one leg without bending the knee.
• Hold while breathing normally.
• Exhale and lower the leg slowly. Repeat with the other leg.
Duration:
⏱️ Hold for 10–20 seconds on each leg. Repeat 3–5 times per side for 1–2 sets.
Contraindications:
❌ Acute lower back injury
❌ Severe slipped disc with nerve symptoms
❌ Pregnancy
❌ Recent abdominal or spinal surgery
❌ Severe hip pain
❌ Uncontrolled hypertension

Udarkarshasana for Lower Back Pain | Reduce Back Stiffness Naturally
🩺 Medical Explanation
Udarkarshasana is a gentle spinal twisting yoga pose that helps improve the mobility of the lumbar spine (lower back). The twisting movement stretches tight muscles of the lower back, hips, and glutes while activating the core muscles that support the spine. It also improves blood circulation around the spinal muscles, helping reduce stiffness and muscle tension.
Note: This pose may help with mild muscular lower back pain and stiffness. It is not a treatment for severe spinal disorders like fractures, severe disc prolapse, spinal infections, or tumors.
🧘 How to Do Udarkarshasana
1. Sit in a squatting position with both feet flat on the floor.
2. Place both hands on your knees.
3. Lower your left knee toward the floor while twisting your upper body to the right.
4. Keep your spine straight and look over your right shoulder.
5. Hold the position while breathing normally.
6. Return to the center and repeat on the opposite side.
7. Perform 3–5 rounds on each side.
⏱️ Duration
- Hold: 10–20 seconds
- Repeat: 3–5 rounds on each side
- Practice: 1–2 times daily
⚠️ Contraindications
- Severe slipped disc
- Recent spine or abdominal surgery
- Severe knee or hip injury
- Pregnancy (avoid deep twisting)
- Severe dizziness or balance problems

⏱️ Duration: 5–10
Medical Explanation (Blood Sugar)
