Book:
We’ve seen the emergence of some truly inspiring businesses and brands in the last few decades. Ideas that have stormed the norms of their respective industries and brought in new vibrancy. There’s one truth that these success stories prove beyond doubt – that industry storms aren’t purely accidental. It is not difficult to decode the method in retrospect and apply it by design to your next challenge. While researching 20 success stories, Anisha Motwani and Ranjan Malik discovered a factor that economists have known for long but businesses don’t - the Total Surplus. One big secret behind most business successes is the stormer’s ability to spot the invisible suboptimal and conceive a breakthrough that unlocks new total surplus. This book features twenty such stories from an exciting mix of categories - foods and beverages, personal care, automobiles, financial services, entertainment, travel and media. Some brands in the book have come from nowhere and created new categories, some have challenged the hegemony of longstanding leaders, and some are decades-old brands which have continuously reinvented themselves to stay on top. If you have been waiting for an opportunity to become the next big game-changer in your industry, Storm the Norm will show you how to turn the project you are driving right now into the greatest success of your career. This book proves beyond any doubt that industry storms aren’t purely accidental; they can be made to happen by design—and, perhaps, at will. Drawing from her rich experience with brands in India, Anisha Motwani has created a powerful package of inspiration and methodology. With a foreword by insights specialist Santosh Desai and an afterword by innovation specialist Ranjan Malik, Storm the Norm will leave you altered. This book is replete with crucial untold secrets of businesses that made all the difference. Right now is the right time. If you decide to wait for the best time ever, you’ll most certainly wait forever. So, whether you are a student or marketing executive or CMO or CEO, go right ahead and storm the norm. The start-up economy today is only about moving money, not value creation.” This is the provocative norm we posed to veteran Fund Managing Partner, VT Bharadwaj, partner, A91 Partners & we began the discussion with something like this..venture capital firms basically mop up money from various sources – individuals and institutions, pension funds across the world, etc.—and then pool it up to then fund start-ups and new ventures. Basically, they move others’ money around and make more money by doing so. We pushed the argument further by saying that VCs are not “making” anything, in the traditional sense of manufacturing or creating. If anything, they’re manufacturers of belief, getting those with investible wealth to believe enough in ventures that don’t currently exist to back them with their surplus money.
In this entire reductionist approach, where is the conversation around sustainable value creation? Listen in to what he has to say…

The world of brands today seems to be about one or more of the following three things: purpose, planned purchase journeys, and pivots enabled by disruptive tech. Where’s the place for frivolous, impulse-driven, unchanging product categories in this world?
So how can a low value, low ticket impulse category like pivot to succeed in a world, where the rules of commerce, culture and communications may be very different?
Anisha Motwani& Narayan Devanathan put together for this episode along with Rajesh Ramakrishnan of Perfetti Van Melle.
