Individual responses to scents are highly personal, but a scent can affect your mood, metabolism, stress levels and libido.
Lavender essential oil is one of the most studied essential oils in terms of its relaxing effects. A study found that lavender oil calmed the nervous system, lowering blood pressure, heart rate, and skin temperature.
Ylang Ylang essential oil has been shown to be relaxing and decrease blood pressure in many small studies.
Jasmine essential oil is less well-studied, but does have one study that suggests that the odor of jasmine tea can be calming.
There are many more therapeutic essential oils to explore, including earthy vetiver, Valerian root, or Roman chamomile. While most essential oil aromatherapies have not yet been rigorously studied, many can still have calming effects.

In a 2014 study published in the journal Biomedical Research International, it was shown that a four-week aromatherapy program for older persons with chronic pain was effective in reducing levels of depression, anxiety, and stress.
Essential oils that improve mental health include lavender, jasmine, sandalwood, ylang-ylang, clary sage, and rose.
