What is “Agni” in Ayurveda?
In Ayurveda, Agni means the body’s digestive and metabolic fire — the principle responsible for digesting food and transforming it into nourishment for the body.
The simple idea is:
Food → Digestion (Agni) → Nutrients → Tissue nourishment → Healthy hair
When Agni is weak (Mandagni), Ayurveda suggests that food may not be properly digested and assimilated. This can lead to Ama (undigested metabolic waste, in Ayurvedic terminology) and inadequate nourishment of the body's tissues.
🌿 How does this relate to hair?
Ayurveda considers hair (Kesha) to be closely connected with the nourishment of the body's tissues, particularly Asthi Dhatu (bone tissue). So, when digestion and tissue nourishment are impaired, Ayurveda traditionally associates this with problems such as:
Weak Agni → poor digestion → inadequate nourishment → weaker hair → hair fall/thinning
Before changing your hair products again… ask yourself: How is your Agni?
