Cholesterol is a fat-like substance that is part of the body's cell membranes and is required for the formation of bile acids, many hormones and vitamin D.
The human body produces cholesterol on its own and also gets it from food.
Cholesterol synthesis occurs in the liver, although small amounts are produced in the adrenal glands, skin, intestinal walls and other organs. Taking into account the fact that cholesterol is one of the most important products of metabolism, its content in blood is strictly limited to 5 mmol/l. Elevated levels of cholesterol should not be exceeded.
