For us at Nili Botanicals, these words bring up a very personal part of our history.
Our work takes us back to something we were once forced to give up.
Indigo.
We are reminded of our colonial past almost every day. Indigo was once at the heart of Bengal's economy and textile traditions, but under British rule farmers were forced into its cultivation and pushed into such severe exploitation that they rose in revolt.
The revolt ended. Independence came. But some memories remained.
Even today, when we speak to farmers about growing indigo, some ask us:

And it isn't only farmers. We have met educated people who genuinely believe that growing indigo will ruin the land.
A crop that was once deeply woven into Bengal's economy, textile heritage and knowledge systems became something generations were taught to fear.
Perhaps this is one of the quieter legacies of colonialism.
So when we talk about bringing indigo back to Bengal, it is not simply about reviving a crop.
It is about reclaiming something that our history made us fear.
And perhaps this too is ๐˜ˆ๐˜ต๐˜ฎ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ช๐˜ณ๐˜ฃ๐˜ฉ๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ต๐˜ข โ€” not always inventing something new, but remembering what we already knew, rebuilding what we lost, creating livelihoods from it, and taking it to the world.

Our first batch of indigo is finally ready.

It has been grown with small and marginal farmers in the drought-prone district of Purulia and is 100% ๐˜๐˜ฏ๐˜ฅ๐˜ช๐˜จ๐˜ฐ๐˜ง๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ข ๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜ค๐˜ต๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ๐˜ช๐˜ข, cultivated on our own farms.

One question led us to start Nili Botanicals.

The amount of indigo sold in the market as "natural" seems quite impossible when there are so few indigo crops actually being grown in India today.

So we decided to grow our own.

Every batch is authentic, pure and completely traceableโ€”from the field where it was grown to the extraction process.

We've also chosen to keep our ๐ข๐ง๐๐ข๐ ๐จ ๐ข๐ง ๐ฉ๐š๐ฌ๐ญ๐ž ๐Ÿ๐จ๐ซ๐ฆ, as close as possible to the way it is naturally derived during extraction. The British dried indigo into cakes because it had to survive months of sea travel across the world. With modern shipping, we don't have that limitation anymore. So we've chosen to preserve it in paste form instead.

Our idea is simpleโ€”to create value for the artists, designers and brands who are creating beautiful products with natural dyes and indigo, and give them the best material to work with.

The indigo leaves are harvested and transformed into natural indigo.

An artist then uses that same indigo to create artworks like this one, inspired by Bengal's rich textile heritage.

This World Environment Day, we're reflecting on a journey that comes full circleโ€”from a farmer's field to a piece of art.

We think it looks beautiful :) But more importantly, it carries a story of farmers, artisans, heritage, and a more conscious relationship with the things we bring into our homes.

Perhaps that's what makes it different from just another piece of dรฉcor. It's a conversation.
