Going grey naturally.

After years of using hair colour, I was finally told by my dermatologist to stop colouring. She saw the look of shock on my face and asked if I would listen to her and take her advice. I had no options when she pointed out the dark patches on my face. It was diagnosed as melasma. Apparently, hair colour, over a long period of time, can and very often does permeate the skin.

It was a big decision on my part and a rather difficult one. But I told myself... "What the hell!" Covid, otherwise a spoiler in our social lives, proved to be an advantage. My only regret..."Wish I had started the process earlier when the lockdown started in March 2020."

It does take anywhere between a year and year and half for the greying out process, depending on the length of the hair.

And here I am. It's the 'neither here, nor there' stage. I'm neither unabashedly grey, nor stylishly black.

What I had learnt was, that the one thing you need to invest in is a good haircut from time to time. I have always had the privilege of having a very good stylist. of . A young girl who is extremely talented. She was excited and told me how she would go about it. There have been times when I've told her how difficult it's been to go through this. She has always discouraged me from colouring my hair. Being a businesswoman, owning salons, it would've made business sense for her to have someone come every three weeks for hair colour and all the hair treatments that went along with it. But she firmly stuck to her ground.

I'm sure a lot of women like me have the same concerns. It's not easy. Good, well meaning friends have consoled me by dropping names of famous personalities and have said how I look like them. I've had friends staring at my hair while talking to me. For them, it's not the way they've seen me, ever.

But one thing for sure is that it's a very liberating feeling. I don't need to worry about hair colour anymore. This is the real me.
