Basil essential oil
Its pleasant and slightly chilly in some parts of the world and the best way to combat cold is using Basil Oil. The name originated from Greek word basilium and hence Greeks referred to Basil as “King of plants”.
All the parts of the plant are used namely the stem, leaves and flowers to derive oil. Our Tulsi plant is called “Holy Basil”.
This royal oil has been used to strengthen the mind and heart since the 16th century. It is believed to be capable of improving memory and also clear the mind. The sweet aroma just engulfs one’s mind. It has a lot of therapeutic properties. I have listed some of them.
It increases blood circulation thereby increasing metabolism. Its an analgesic providing pain relief. The pain caused by arthritis, injuries, wounds, burns, bruises, scars, sprains, headaches, etc can be reduced by using this oil.The oil provides instant relief in case of bloating of stomach. It has got carminative properties. It allows to treat digestive conditions such as indigestion, constipation, flatulence, and stomach cramps. The clarifying aroma of basil essential oil helps to open up sinuses and reduce the occurence of coughing. It also has a antispasmodic nature, which is very effective in treating whooping cough. The refreshing effect of basil makes it a fantastic remedy at treating anxiety, mental fatigue, depression, and migraines. It also helps to enhance mental strength and clarity. The antibacterial properties of basil essential oil makes it an effective remedy in treating skin, ear, bladder, and more infections. Basil oil helps to open up nasal passages, which allows breathing easier for sufferers of asthma, allergies, bronchitis, sinusitis, etc. Basil essential oil can add luster to dry dull skin and hair. It can also be used to treat acne and skin infections.
Though this oil is considered safe and also allowed by FDA to include in some of food substances those with epilepsy should avoid using this oil.It should also not be used for children under 18 months and for pregnant women and also women who are breast feeding. It can be an irritant to the skin and mucuos membrane so it is advisable to dilute it and use at all times though in certain conditions it is used in its neat form.

ishing everyone a Happy Navaratri season.
While Navaratri celebrations have begun in India most of the people in the West are welcoming Fall. Fall reminds me of Pine, Cinnamon and dried leaves.
Sweet, woody smell of pine trees is familiar to all who love being outdoors. Pine trees are evergreen in nature and found in abundance hence the oil obtained from them is inexpensive. Pine oil is obtained from steam distillation of the needles, twigs and cones.
There are medicinal uses of pine oil. Hippocrates used pine oil to treat pulmonary conditions and Pliny recommended it for respiratory ailments. In Aromatherapy it is used to stimulate the mind and also the body.It has an energising effect on the body and it is used to treat mild depression. It also helps in slowing down cellular deterioration thus slowing the process of aging. It is also used in various skin conditions like psoriasis, acne, boils. It is also an excellent cleaning agent hence used in sprays and room freshners.
There are also certain precautions which need to be taken as pine oil is very powerful. If it is not diluted then it can irritate skin and mucuos membrane.
Ganapati bappa has arrived and everyone is happy celebrating his arrival. Different kind of flowers are offered. Incense sticks are burnt. Sandalwood pastes are applied. And the whole atmosphere is full of fragrances.
Sandalwood oil is one of the best oils suitable for all skin types. It has relaxing, calming, cooling and soothing properties. It helps to ease an anxious mind and promotes sleep which gives one's mind and body a good rest.
It not only cleanses the skin but also gives a good texture. It is therefore added to facial and bath oils and also to various after shave lotions, creams. It has its own sweet warm aroma and it blends with any other oil. It can be readily mixed with products which are used by both men and women.
It is safe and non-irritating oil however as all essential oils require the basic blend this too needs to be diluted before using for skin or hair.
