"Doctor, which test can tell me if I have oral cancer?"
There isn't one single test that is right for everyone.
Depending on what we find during examination, doctors may use different tests to investigate a suspicious area:
🔹 Clinical examination — carefully examining the mouth, tongue, throat and neck.
🔹 Biopsy — if an area looks suspicious, a small tissue sample may be examined under a microscope to confirm whether cancer is present.
🔹 Imaging tests — such as CT, MRI or PET-CT may be used when we need to understand the extent of a disease or plan treatment.
The important thing is this:
Don't decide which test you need based on Google.
The right test depends on your symptoms and clinical examination.
And if you have a persistent mouth ulcer, unexplained lump, white/red patch, difficulty swallowing or another change that isn't going away, don't keep waiting.
Get it evaluated.

Doctor, is tea bad for me?

Not necessarily.

As an Oral Cancer Surgeon, what concerns me is the temperature of the tea, not the tea itself.
Research has shown that regularly drinking very hot beverages (around 65°C or hotter) may increase the risk of cancers of the mouth and throat because repeated heat can damage the lining of these tissues over time.

That doesn't mean you need to stop drinking tea.

It simply means:
☕ Let it cool for a minute or two before taking the first sip.

This advice becomes even more important if you:
Use gutka, paan, or to***co
Smoke
Drink alcohol regularly

When these risk factors are combined, they can further increase the risk of head and neck cancers.
Small habits can make a big difference over the years.
Sometimes prevention is as simple as waiting for your tea to cool down.

"Doctor, I have a thyroid lump... does that mean I have cancer?"
This is one of the most common questions I hear in my OPD.
The answer is No.
Most thyroid lumps (nodules) are not cancerous. In fact, many are completely benign and only require regular monitoring.
The important thing is not to panic—but also not to ignore it.

If you've noticed:
• A swelling in the front of your neck
• A lump that's gradually increasing in size
• Difficulty swallowing or breathing
• Changes in your voice that persist
..it's time to get it evaluated.

A simple clinical examination, ultrasound, and, if needed, a needle biopsy (FNAC) can usually help us understand what we're dealing with.
Remember, a neck lump is a symptom—not a diagnosis.
The earlier we evaluate it, the more treatment options we have if anything needs attention.
Don't let fear delay the right diagnosis.
