Before you answer...

I've been following the conversations about Omotola's interview, and honestly.. i think Many of us reacting from emotion instead of asking one simple question.

What was she really trying to say?
Let's forget the names involved for a moment.

Imagine Hollywood decideds to make a movie about the Biafra W@r.

The villagers are running.
The women are crying.
The soldiers are shouting.

Then, in the background, everybody is speaking fluent Hausa or shouting wayo Allah na or Oluwa o.

Would Nigerians complain?

Of course they would.

Not like Hausa or Yoruba is a bad language....

But because it doesn't belong in that particular setting.

The issue is accuracy.

This is the same reason Nigerians complain whenever Hollywood give a Nigerian character a Kenyan accent,
a Senegalese surname, or mixes up our Cultures as if We've complained about these things for years.

Omotola never asked that the lady be moved from the production.

She only suggested that the lady be moved from the Egun-speaking role to the pidgin-speaking role because she wasn't speaking Egun correctly. Instead, she kept shouting, Egbuo m o! Egbuo m o!," which is Igbo, not Egun.

So if someone notices an accuracy problem during production and points it out...

From what I understand, Omotola raised what she believed was accuracy issue with the people in charge.

The response she got was simply

"We don't care."
To me....

That is actually the saddest part of the whole story.

Some people say Nigeria was never supposed to be one country.
But guess what? The people who colonized us don't care. Just as the man told Omotola.

The British put the Hausas, Igbos, Yorubas and all of us together.
To them, we are one. That's why we are one country today.

The same thing with the Omotola issue.
His response was "i don't care," And some of us are happy about it.

Now let's be honest:
If this was a white man's movie, they would spend money, time and energy to get it right.
They would use the right people. Teach the actors well.
Make sure the language, culture and message are correct.

So if Omotola complained, it was the producer's job to fix it.
Even if the girl is an Igbo girl and doesn't speak the language well.
The producer should have gotten someone to teach her.
You don't have to change the character. Just train her. I believe Omotola too was trained during her own time acting Igbo girls role, cause I can't remember her using Yoruba words in place of Igbo word.

Some of you are saying "Omotola should have taught the girl Egun"

Omotola herself works with Yoruba speakers not Egun speakers.
And the girl took advantage of the people there because she knew they didn't understand the language.
That's why she was shouting in Igbo instead of Egun.

If this was in Nigeria, she wouldn't dare shout in Igbo instead of Egun. Even if she can't speak it she would have looked for a way to learn Just to fit in. That's if she really values her work or the role given to her.

My point is simple
They don't care about us the way they Care about themselves.
And until we start caring about our stories, they won't value us. Because right now we are even the ones copying the whites we Left our own culture and way of life to pick theirs.

This shows how little effort some foreign productions make to represent African cultures correctly. Now, i understand why many Igbo people became emotional.

Let's be honest.

There has been a lot of tension, misunderstanding, and hurt in recent years.
When people carry pain for a long time, they begin to hear every conversation through that pain.

And I've come to realize something when someone has been wounded for too long, even a helping hand can begin to look like another attack.

That doesn't mean every Yoruba person Igbos or h@tes Igbos
It doesn't mean every Igbo person is looking for trouble.

It simply means that trust has been damaged.
And damaged trust is difficult to rebuild. Instead of asking.

"Which tribe said it" Or "What region is the person that said it."
Maybe we should first ask.
"what was said actually wrong?
Sometimes the answer is yes.
Sometimes the answer is no.

But if every conversation immediately becomes an Igbo vs Yoruba battle... Or one region vs one other. Then we stop listening.
We stop thinking well.

And we start fighting people instead of discussing the real issue.
Nigeria has Over 500 languages.

Every single one deserves to be presented correctly.
Not because one language is greater than another
But because every culture deserves respect.
