My first memory about a festival at a country church is really faraway. I was a little girl when I first attended a traditional celebration held in one. I think it was Madonna del Rimedio, in September, near Orosei. Here the link to an old video Madonna del Rimedio festival . I vividly remember a little white church, in a bright, dazzling light and around it, other simple buildings, named "cumbessias", where pilgrims coming from towns close by, were hosted during the days preceding the procession. In Italy the Easter holidays are strongly felt and a lot of religious celebrations are held; in Sardinia too, several towns have renowned processions and someone of them are really worth it, like the ones in Alghero and Castelsardo. These days I'm getting up earlier than usual and I love to have a look at the backyard. Little birds feel the incoming spring and sing their songs with powerful voices, compared to their little sizes. Mating season is arriving and the need to establish a territory and attract a partner is pressing. The sun rises earlier too and this light in the morning seems to be a promise of better days. The landscape of our childhood is dominated by granite. It's on granite that we furthered developped our climbing skills, in the long summer afternoons. When the sun was not too hot and the evening was approaching, we ran endlessly up and down the big boulders in the countryside. This granite was smoothed by time but still coarse, with its colourful grains, white, pink and translucent, that we touched with our fingers, and which our poor knees were at the mercy of a number of times. When I began to be interested in nature I was in my teens: there was a Science teacher who was trying to organize a group of students. She suggested bird watching to us and we began with some wetlands near Olbia. She opened up a whole new world to me ! We started wandering looking for ponds and salt lagoons. Initially we stayed in Olbia and the surroundings areas but soon we started searching for birds further afield and I began discovering Sardinia. [ 865 more words ]

September has finally arrived. After long and repeated heat waves and a dry season that hasn't finished yet. Our Mediterranean forest is suffering the drought and I don't think I've ever seen the bushes and the trees so dry with their leaves rustling if moved by the wind. During summer, on our little Mediterranean island, we’re usually busy with exhausting and long discussions about tourists, tourism and identity. Sardinia, by European standards, is quite uninhabited, with only one million six hundred thousand citizens, concentrated mainly in the south, around the city of Cagliari, or along the coast. Usually little Sardinian villages have a main street that is named something like Via Nazionale or Via Roma or Via Libertà. When you arrive in Armungia (482 inhabitants), a little village near Muravera in south east Sardinia, the main street is Via Emilio Lussu.
