Canoe ~ Vintage Perfume Study
A limited number of kits are available for purchase on Full Petal Alchemy website for the upcoming TikTok LIVE panel discussion on October 18, 2026@ 7pm/CT.
Canoe, a fougére, was launched by The House of Dana in 1936. Another Jean Carles’ perfume and a sharp pivot from his scandalous Tabu.
The kits are not IFRA Compliant and include materials with regulatory bans. This is a chance to discuss Nitro Musks, Modern Musks, Rosewood Oil, and gendered perfume while experiencing the materials.

TikTok LIVE Vintage Perfume Study ~ Canoe
Canoe, the 1936 fougère by Jean Carles for the house of Dana, will be the subject of the next Vintage Perfume Study. Join us for the panel discussion LIVE on October 18, 7-9pm CT. Lavender, oakmoss, and coumarin the signature fougère notes are complemented by banned nitro musks and CITES restricted Rosewood Oil. We’ll discuss the banned ingredients and modern replacements, along with sustainably harvested Rosewood Oil.
Canoe was a fresh scent created for women with a different lifestyle than the women imagined in Tabu. Eventually, rebranded for men, Canoe became a classic barbershop fragrance for decades.

Can’t Find My Mind

Paris Catacombs
In 2019 | visited the Paris Catacombs. The experience was so memorable, I had my family join me in 2022. I’ve come to realize, it isn’t an experience for everyone. For me it was a reminder of how short life is and how equal we are in death.
The catacombs are humid and smelled damp in the way of Fenchyl Alcohol; an empty aquarium with drying algae. There was also a dusty, mineral quality to the air. The collective breath of all of the visitors was also perceptible.

Lichen Collecting
After it rains I like to collect the twigs that sprout to life with a diverse collection of lichens. I often find them on the sidewalk or on lawns. Sometimes I wonder what people think as I contemplate which stick I should add to my collection. Then another twig catches my eye and I become lost in the land of lichens.

Happy Labor Day!
My Grandma died a month before I was born, but growing up I heard many stories of her involvement and activism supporting Worker’s Rights. My mom worked briefly as a longshorewoman, and I remember participating in one of their strikes.
Recently I came across a few articles that mentioned my Grandma, Dorothy Salmini. This article is from the Baltimore Afro American and references this historic event: “The Baltimore Meeting (1945): In 1945, a labor-focused meeting was convened in Baltimore by left-wing and communist activists. The central theme of the assembly was titled “Religious Fifth Columns in the Trade Unions.” This meeting was to defend against an attack on labor from a fascist priest.
These days I think quite often about my Grandma’s legacy and see her passion to speak up for what’s right alive and well in my mom. Happy Labor Day!

Ambergris Samples
I just listed a few samples of Ambergris on my Full Petal Alchemy page under Incense & Resins. It’s a tiny, but very fragrant sample. If you’ve been Ambergris-curious, here’s a chance to smell the real thing.

Ambergris Samples - Many people are curious, but don’t have an opportunity to smell ambergris. I’ve had a few inquiries, so tomorrow I’m going to have tiny samples in my shop. Even small amounts of ambergris are incredibly fragrant, so it’s a great way to experience it for yourself.

Frankincense (Boswellia Papyrifera)
This frankincense is highly prized in the Sudan where it originates and is also commonly burned in churches. In addition to boswellic acid, it contains incensole and incense acetate. Both chemicals have been shown to have anti-anxiolytic, anti-depressant, neuroprotective properties after TBI and ischemic events in animal models. I prefer to use my electric incense burner to limit exposure to charcoal smoke.

A quick sketch before our shuttle picked us up yesterday to head to the Italian Alps. I’ll use my sketches as journal pages that add texture to my memories in a way photos can’t.
