The difference between a model and a beauty queen..

Having been extensively involved in beauty pageantry over the years, I have come to the realisation that many are in the dark when it comes to the difference between a beauty queen and a runway model. Typically it's thought of being the same thing, one for all, but that's far from true. So here's my clarification on it.

As a pageant contestant the focus is on you, whereas on a runway model the focus is on the clothing. In beauty pageants, the criteria is to showcase oneself as an overall package, the dress being inconsequential. On the other hand, the point of a fashion show is to sell clothes, not people. Fashion runway models are there solely to make the dress look good. Beauty queens on the other hand try to exhibit their personalities and steal the show.

Training techniques are variably different for models and beauty queens. Beauty pageant contestants are taught to charm and dazzle the audiences and judges in their favour, with spins and twirls, large smiles and using eye contact. Fashion models on the other hand are taught to have a signature walk that accentuates their clothing.

Another difference is physical criteria. In pageants, they usually look for a commanding and poised feminine beauty, that stands apart from the rest of the pack. Fashion models do not have to be conventionally beautiful and it works in their favour if they're not, as clients are usually looking for the next fresh face. Traditionally, fashion models have been tall, naturally lean and lanky.

Models compete for shows and spots with designers, whilst pageant girls compete for titles. A typical pageantry contest includes several rounds such as evening wear, swimsuit, talent, and question and answer. In the latter, a contestant should be able to speak well and talk on a wide variety of humanitarian subjects. Contrary to belief they are both smart and strive to make the best of themselves and perfect their trade.
