The first time I held my ARVs, I stared at them for a long time.
They looked small.
But they felt heavy.
Every pill felt like a reminder: “You are different.”
I used to hide them. I avoided taking them in front of people. I skipped once.
Just once.
And the guilt ate me alive.
At my next clinic visit, the doctor showed me my viral load.
“It’s rising,” she said gently.
That moment scared me more than the diagnosis.
Because I realized something.
The pills were not my enemy.
The virus was.
I went back to consistency.
Months later, my viral load dropped again.
Undetectable.
Now when I hold my medication, I don’t see shame.
I see control.
These pills don’t define me.
They protect me.

There's nothing unique about how someone contracts HIV. Some are born with it, some get it from a partner, some through no fault of their own, and others through circumstances beyond their control. The route of infection doesn't determine a person's worth or deserving of love and care. HIV is HIV, and it doesn't discriminate.

We all take the same medication, face the same stigma, and struggle with the same fears – like shortages of ARVs and other essential commodities. Our challenges are the same, and our courage is fueled by the same determination. No one's story is more important or less significant than another's. What matters is that we are all surviving, living, and deserving of dignity and care.

We are all on this journey together, and it's time to recognize that our shared humanity is what unites us. Let's work towards a world where everyone can live with HIV without fear of judgment or rejection. Let's celebrate our strength, resilience, and courage.

If you're living with HIV, know that you're part of a community that supports and cares for you. Your story is valid, and your worth isn't defined by your status. We face the same battles, and together, we can overcome them.

Let's keep spreading love, acceptance, and understanding. Let's break down the stigma surrounding HIV and support those affected. We are all deserving of love, care, and respect – no matter how we got HIV.
