Swedish massage is one of the most common and best-known types of massage. If it’s your first time at the spa , Swedish massage is the perfect massage for you !

It uses five styles of long, flowing strokes to massage. The five basic strokes are effleurage (sliding or gliding), petrissage (kneading), tapotement (rhythmic tapping), friction (cross fiber) and vibration/shaking.

The massage therapist incorporates these techniques into a flowing massage session that leaves the patient physically and emotionally relaxed. The trademark move of Swedish massage is Effleurage, long gliding strokes that can be firm or soft, depending on purpose and client.

Swedish massage has shown to be helpful in reducing pain, joint stiffness, and improving function in patients with osteoarthritis of the knee over a period of eight weeks.

Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy
This is a form of alternative medicine that uses plant materials, known as essential oils, and other aromatic compounds for the purpose of altering a person’s mind, mood, cognitive function or health.

Essential oils are concentrated extracts taken from the roots, leaves, seeds, or blossoms of plants.

How Aromatherapy works :

The Mind

Essential oil aromas stimulate the part of the brain that affects emotion. The impression of the aroma is sent directly and immediately to the limbic system where memories are stored and pleasure and emotions are perceived. When stimulated, the limbic system releases chemicals that affect the central nervous system.
Inhaling essential oils can help us attain a pleasurable emotional balance and this can have a therapeutic effect on physical problems, particularly those that are stress-related.

The Body

Essential oils are quickly absorbed through the skin, travelling around individual cells and into hair follicles, where the oils enter the sebaceous glands and mingle with the skin's natural emollients.

Essential oils add an aesthetic dimension to the healing effects of massage therapy, compresses, facial steams and body and foot baths. This helps us in cleansing, deodorizing, toning and balancing.

The Spirit

A diffused aroma creates a mysterious presence in a room, then wafts away like a wish or prayer. The essential oils can be thought of as the quintessential spirit of plants, captured in a jar.
Essential oils have positive effects on every level of being. Their unique properties enhance the mind, body and spirit.

Stress Management:
Stress management starts with an honest assessment of how you react to stress.

It is hard to avoid stress these days with so many competing demands for your time and attention.
With good stress management skills, you can cope with stress in a healthy way.

Good stress management is understanding how you react to stress — and making changes if necessary. First, take a look at how you react to stress. Some people seem to take everything in stride. Their naturally laid-back attitudes shine through, even in stressful situations.
Another deadline? Bring it on. The dishwasher is leaking? No problem, it'll be a simple repair. Others get anxious at the first sign of a stressful situation. Running late for a meeting? Time to panic! Stuck in a traffic jam? Let the cursing begin!

Here are some common but unhealthy reactions to stress. Do any of these describe your reactions? If you're not sure, consider keeping a daily journal for a week or so to monitor your reactions to stressful situations.
Pain. You may unconsciously clench your jaws or fists or develop muscle tension, especially in your neck and shoulders, all of which can lead to unexplained physical pain.
‌Over eating . Stress may trigger you to eat even when you're not hungry, or you may skip exercise.

‌Anger. Stress may leave you with a short fuse. When you're under pressure, you may find yourself arguing with co-workers, friends or loved ones — sometimes with little provocation or about things that have nothing to do with your stressful situation.

‌Crying. Stress may trigger crying jags, sometimes seemingly without warning. Little things unrelated to your stress may leave you in tears.

‌Depression. Sometimes stress may be too much to take. You might avoid the problem, call in sick to work, feel hopeless or simply give up.

‌Negativity. When you don't cope well with stress, you may automatically expect the worst or magnify the negative aspects of any undesirable situation.

Once you've identified the unhealthy reactions you may be having to uncontrolled stress, you can begin to improve your stress management skills. Stress management techniques abound, including:

‌Scale back. Cut back on your obligations when possible. While it may seem easier said than done, take a close look at your daily, weekly and monthly schedule and find meetings, activities, dinners or chores that you can cut back on or delegate to someone else.

‌Prepare. Stay ahead of stress by preparing for meetings or trips, scheduling your time better, and setting realistic goals for tasks both big and small.

‌Reach out. Make or renew connection with others. Surrounding yourself with supportive family, friends, co-workers, or clergy and spiritual leaders can have a positive effect on your mental well-being and your ability to cope with stress.

‌Take up a hobby. It may seem cliche, but when you engage in something enjoyable, it can soothe and calm your restless mind.

‌Relax. Physical activity, meditation, yoga, massage and other relaxation techniques can help you manage stress.

‌Get enough sleep. Lack of sufficient sleep affects your immune system and your judgement and makes you more likely to snap over minor irritations.

‌Get professional help. If your stress management efforts aren't helpful enough, see your doctor. Chronic, uncontrolled stress can lead to a variety of potentially serious health problems, including depression and pain.

Stress usually doesn't just magically get better on its own. You may have to actively work on getting control of the stress in your life so that it doesn't control you. When you first identify how you react to stressful situations, you then can put yourself in a better position to manage the stress, even if you can't eliminate it.

All the best,
BEST MASSAGE.

Good morning Nairobi!

Mindfulness exercises: How to get started.
Find out how to use mindfulness exercises to develop a greater awareness of the world around you.

What is mindfulness?
Mindfulness is the act of being intensely aware of what you're sensing and feeling at every moment — without interpretation or judgement.
Spending too much time planning, problem-solving, daydreaming, or thinking negative or random thoughts can be draining. It can also make you more likely to experience stress, anxiety and symptoms of depression. Practising mindfulness exercises, on the other hand, can help you direct your attention away from this kind of thinking and engage with the world around you.
What are the benefits of mindfulness exercises?
Practising mindfulness exercises can have many possible benefits, including:
-Reduced stress, anxiety and depression
-Less negative thinking and distraction
-Improved mood
What are some examples of mindfulness exercises?
There are many ways to practice mindfulness. For example:
Pay attention. The next time you meet someone, listen closely to his or her words. Aim to develop a habit of understanding others and delaying your own judgements and criticisms.
Make the familiar new again. Find a few small, familiar objects — such as a toothbrush, apple or cellphone — in your home or office. Look at the objects with fresh eyes. Identify one new detail about each object that you didn't see before. As you become more aware of your world, you might become fonder of the things around you.
Focus on your breathing. Sit in a quiet place with your back straight, but relaxed.Let your awareness of everything else fall away. Pay attention to your nostrils as air passes in and out. When your mind wanders, gently redirect your attention to your breath. Don't judge yourself. Remember that you're not trying to become anything — such as a good meditator. You're simply becoming aware of what's happening around you, breath by breath.

A soothing massage can help you unwind, but that's not all. Massage is no longer available only through luxury spas and upscale health clubs. Today, massage therapy is offered in businesses, clinics, hospitals and even airports.
There are many different types of massage including :

Swedish massage. This is a gentle form of massage that uses long strokes, kneading, deep circular movements, vibration and tapping to help relax and energize you.

Deep massage. This massage technique uses slower, more-forceful strokes to target the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue, commonly to help with muscle damage from injuries.

Sports massage. This is similar to Swedish massage, but it's geared toward people involved in sport activities to help prevent or treat injuries.

Trigger point massage. This massage focuses on areas of tight muscle fibres that can form in your muscles after injuries or overuse.

What is reflexology? Can it relieve stress?

Answer

Reflexology is the application of pressure to areas on the feet, hands and ears. Reflexology is generally relaxing and may be an effective way to alleviate stress.

The theory behind reflexology is that these areas correspond to organs and systems of the body. Proponents believe that pressure applied to these areas affects the organs and benefits the person's health.

Reflexologists use foot charts to guide them as they apply pressure to specific areas. Sometimes these practitioners use items, such as rubber balls, rubber bands and sticks of wood, to assist in their work.

Several studies indicate that reflexology may reduce pain and psychological symptoms, such as anxiety and depression, and enhance relaxation and sleep. Studies also show that reflexology may have benefits in palliative care of people with cancer.

Reflexologists claim that reflexology also can treat a wide variety of medical conditions, such as asthma, diabetes and cancer. However, scientific evidence is lacking to support these claims.

Reflexology is generally considered safe, although very vigorous pressure may cause discomfort for some people.
