This is Deborah Ocheido from Nigeria. There is so much I love about her, but one thing in particular inspired me to write this post: the Modest Fashion Event she organized. The event took place yesterday in Nigeria.

For a long time, I had been wondering if there was a platform dedicated to showcasing modest fashion, but I couldn't find one.

Then, to my delight, I came across the Modest Fashion Event.

How I wish I had been there!

The ladies were beautifully covered, yet they looked elegant, stunning, and confident. ✨

Modest fashion is a beautiful reminder that style, grace, and dignity can all shine together.

So far, the Lord has taught me to completely leave all my concerns, whether big or small, in His hands. I have learnt to fully trust Him. He has also shown me that although I often speak of the Israelites as people who complained frequently and lacked faith, I am no different from them.

During my research journey, I complained to God many times. I even told those I could confide in that God seemed so silent, as if He didn't exist.

In my prayers, I often asked Him, "Why are You so silent?" Honestly, it felt as though He was not hearing my prayers. The more I prayed, the more challenges I faced.

By then, my DAAD scholarship had ended, yet I had not published a single research article. Publication was a requirement for my graduation.

At that point, I had written my first manuscript and submitted it to Next Research (Elsevier) for peer review. The review process took much longer than I had expected.

Since my scholarship had ended, I decided to return to Malawi and continue working on my publications. I had mixed emotions. I was excited to come back home after being away for two years, but at the same time, I was filled with worry about my education, my publications, and completing my master's programme.

The delay in the review of my first paper gave me the motivation and determination to write two more research articles.

If my first paper had been accepted quickly, I believe I would not have gone on to write the other two papers because I would already have met the graduation requirement.

By the grace of God, the two additional articles were accepted for publication before the first one. One was published in Environmental Science and Pollution Research (Springer Nature), and another in the Journal of Sustainable Research in Engineering (Discover JKUAT).

Finally, after a year of waiting, my first article, submitted to Next Research, was accepted for publication and is now available online.

A lot happened during my research journey, and it all led me to one conclusion: I have no reason to worry about the future. God is in full control of my life, and He is in full control of all those who put their trust in Him.

What seemed like delays and challenges became the very things that built my strength, perseverance, and led to even greater achievements. Today, I am the author of three published research articles.

Indeed, "All things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose" (Romans 8:28).

What I once saw as hardships were actually blessings in disguise. To God be all the glory.

It's another week of chasing our dreams and goals fearlessly. No matter the challenges or disappointments, don't give up—That is part of the journey. That is part of growth. 📈

Over the years in my academic journey, I have developed a strong interest in environmental protection and waste management.

Although my academic background is in Irrigation Engineering from Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources, I discovered that I was not limited to conducting only irrigation-specific projects. With the guidance of my BSc supervisor, Dr Wellam Kamthunzi, I realized that I could also contribute to wastewater treatment research by developing methods to remove pollutants from water and make it suitable for reuse in applications such as irrigation.

As a result, my BSc research project focused on laundry wastewater treatment. During my MSc studies, I continued my work in water treatment using biochar. My research investigated the removal of selected antibiotics (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) from water, contributing to efforts aimed at addressing the growing challenge of antibiotic resistance.

Beyond contributing to engineering solutions, I am also passionate about creating social impact in environmental protection. Engineering solutions alone are not enough; without community engagement and behavioural change, even the best innovations can fail to achieve their intended impact.

I am therefore excited to work with Solutions Inc in developing practical solutions to environmental challenges.

Recently, we launched a Climate Education Project at Chimutu CDSS, where we will focus on smart climatic innovations, digital skills, and mentorship. We have started with 30 students (15 boys and 15 girls).

This initiative aims to empower students to become changemakers and innovators, developing solutions to climate change and contributing to a more sustainable future.

I look forward to this journey of combining engineering, environmental stewardship, and youth empowerment to create lasting change.🌱♻️🌍

I am so excited to share the publication of my third article, titled "Adsorption mechanisms of sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim using
phosphoric acid activated white-rot fungus biochar", published in Next Research.

The study explores the use of phosphoric acid-activated white-rot fungus biochar for the removal of selected antibiotics (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) from water. This work contributes to ongoing efforts to mitigate antibiotic contamination in aquatic systems and address the growing challenge of antibiotic resistance.
