Acne prone skin: 5 things to avoid.
1. Greasy cosmetics - these are comedogenic and should not be used. Petroleum jelly, glycerine and all oils and oily products fall in this category. Most people who have acne or have a tendency to get acne, already have an oily skin and applying additional oil increases the chances of getting acne or worsens already existing acne.
2. Squeezing pimples - this increases chances of permanent scarring on the affected areas.
3. Contact between hair and the facial skin - scalp hair should be styled in a way that the hair should not touch the facial skin. Most hair pomades are comedogenic just like other oily cosmetics.
3. Constantly touching the face - hands should be kept off the face unless when necessary. Constantly touching the face exposes the facial skin to contamination from the environment.
4. Application of foodstuffs on the face - there is a popular myth that applying some foodstuffs like honey, lemons, avocados, eggs, milk, etc can give one a healthy skin. After all it's believed that these products are 'natural' and good for the skin. The only way to get health benefits from all types of food is by actually eating them. Applying food on the skin can cause many complications including irritant dermatitis, acne, etc.
5. Self medication and use topical corticosteroids - topical steroids applied on skin that's prone to acne can cause several complications. They should be avoided. Seek help from a doctor if you aren't sure whether the cream or lotion that you are applying contains a steroid.
