After getting a tattoo, proper aftercare is crucial for healing, preventing infection, and ensuring your tattoo looks its best. Here's a straightforward guide to follow:

✅ Tattoo Aftercare Dos:

Follow your artist’s instructions
Every artist has their own method—trust their advice.

Leave the bandage on
Keep the wrap or bandage on for 2–6 hours (unless told otherwise).

Wash your hands before touching your tattoo
Always keep it clean—dirty hands = infection risk.

Gently clean the tattoo
Use lukewarm water and mild, fragrance-free soap. Pat dry with a clean paper towel.

Apply a thin layer of healing ointment
Use something like Aquaphor, Bepanthen, or a tattoo-specific aftercare product. Switch to an unscented lotion after 3–5 days.

Moisturize regularly
Keep the tattoo slightly moisturized, but don’t overdo it.

Let it breathe
No re-wrapping unless your artist says to.

❌ Tattoo Aftercare Don’ts:

Don’t scratch, pick, or peel
Flaking and itching are normal. Let it heal naturally.

Don’t soak the tattoo
Avoid swimming pools, hot tubs, long showers, or baths for at least 2 weeks.

Don’t expose it to the sun
Keep it out of direct sunlight and avoid sunscreen until fully healed.

Don’t wear tight or dirty clothes
Friction and bacteria can cause irritation or infection.

Don’t listen to random advice online
Always trust your tattoo artist over Reddit or TikTok hacks.

🕒 Healing Timeline:

Days 1–3: Sore, swollen, slight oozing. Wash gently and apply ointment.

Days 4–14: Scabbing, peeling, itching. Switch to light lotion.

Weeks 3–6: Mostly healed, but still settling. Avoid harsh sun exposure.

If you notice excessive redness, swelling, pus, or fever, see a doctor—those can be signs of infection.
