Colorized Early 1940s Original Pilates Studio Photo Slide 1: Close up colorized view Slide 2: Full colorized view Slide 3: Original B&W postcard from my collection of original pilates memorabilia Colorizing this iconic pilates photo was a labor of love, and as usual, consisted of referencing primary source materials. I consulted colorized slides that I discovered as well as photos from Sean Gallagher’s Pilates Archives® to try to get the closed possible colors of the studio that I was able to. During our restoration of the original clawfoot reformer in Sean Gallagher’s Pilates Museum/Studio, we discovered the original colors of the different upholstery Joe used on his reformers over the decades. The color I used in this photo was as close as I could get to the original upholstery from the 1940s. Since we don’t currently have any photos of the original studio carpets, I studied common carpet colors used in the 1940s and found the most similar styles I could find, and used those as a reference. Perhaps someday we will learn how accurate this was! Oftentimes, colorizing photos brings out details that were not so obvious from the black and white photo. For example, in the colorized version the Bust of Joe is much clearer, as is the Benchmat behind Clara. If you’d like to purchase a print of the colorized photo, use the link in my bio!
