Summary: 4 Secrets To A Healthy Scalp For Gorgeous,
Healthy HairThe secret to great hair is a healthy scalp.

Everyone wants shiny, healthy hair, and it’s easy to spend a lot of time and money in pursuit of that goal. Let experts share the secret to fabulous hair & scalp

Your scalp is an extension of your face
The foundation for healthy hair should always start with a healthy scalp. An unhealthy scalp may be dry and itchy or overproducing oil, resulting in either dandruff or greasy hair. In the worst-case scenario, scalp issues such as psoriasis could cause hair loss.

Don’t skip shampooing
It is imperative to cleanse the scalp and hair.
Experts recommend regular washing, especially for those with fine hair that tends to get oily easily. Having sweat and sebum buildup for days is not ideal for the skin; fine hair will appear oily, lank and lifeless.

Oily hair isn’t even the worst possible outcome of not washing your scalp. Some issues that can cause scalp problems and hair loss are psoriasis, ringworm, and protein, iron, and other dietary deficiencies. The pain around your scalp and roots can be caused by build-up of products and sebum, and if left ignored, can lead to proliferation of Malassezia furfur (a type of yeast-like fungus that is known to cause dandruff).

Use products that are gentle on your scalp
Stay away from products that have aggressive cleansing agents. When you do wash your hair, be sure to choose products that aren’t full of harsh chemicals such as sulfates, alcohol, and artificial fragrance.

Massage your scalp daily, massage it often
Experts suggest regular scalp massages for an easy, natural treatment that you can do at home. They recommend first applying a scalp mask, such as our Stimulus Scalp Mask, which has ingredients like organic aloe vera extract to moisturize and soothe the scalp.

If you have a scalp issue such as pain, itching, or dandruff that persists then you should see a dermatologist or trichologist.

4 Secrets To A Healthy Scalp For Gorgeous,

Healthy HairThe secret to great hair is a healthy scalp.

Here’s how to take care of yours. by Kelly Dougher June 22, 2017

Everyone wants shiny, healthy hair, and it’s easy to spend a lot of time and money in pursuit of that goal. Unfortunately, even the best styling products or the most expensive hairdryer won’t be able to help your hair if you’re neglecting your scalp. Out of sight, out of mind—right? Well, no longer!

Healthy hair relies on a healthy scalp. If you’re guilty of neglecting your scalp, you may have noticed issues such as dandruff, greasy hair, an itchy scalp, and even scalp pain. We spoke to a few experts to find out what causes these issues and how to deal with them. Here are the 4 secrets to a healthy scalp—and gorgeous, healthy hair.

Your scalp is an extension of your face

First, it might be time to adjust the way you think of your scalp. “The foundation for healthy hair should always start with a healthy scalp, Think of the scalp as the bedrock for the follicles and consider the scalp the way you think of your face. An unhealthy scalp may be dry and itchy or overproducing oil, resulting in either dandruff or greasy hair—neither of which is a great look. In the worst-case scenario, scalp issues such as psoriasis could cause hair loss.

Your scalp is an extension of your face, and your hair is an extension of your scalp. You wouldn’t neglect your facial skin, so it’s time to start extending that same TLC to your scalp.

Don’t skip shampooing

The co-washing and “no-poo” trends have been very popular in recent years but it’s possible that going without using shampoo can cause more harm than good.

“The popular trend co-washing, where you just use a conditioner instead of shampooing to refresh your hair, can lead to build-up that causes serious scalp disorders and even hair loss. It is imperative to cleanse the scalp and hair.” Some issues that can cause scalp problems and hair loss are psoriasis, ringworm, and protein, iron, and other dietary deficiencies. Some require a prescription from your dermatologist, but many issues can be solved with dietary or hygienic adjustments.

Experts also recommend regular washing, especially for those with fine hair that tends to get oily easily. Having sweat and sebum buildup for days is not ideal for the skin; fine hair will appear oily, lank and lifeless.” Everyone’s hair is different so you must find what works for you, but for most people at least one wash per week is ideal for a clean scalp and hair. Try washing your hair daily, then every other day, and then once a week while keeping note of scalp dryness or itchiness, hair and scalp greasiness, and overall shine and hydration to find the shampooing routine that works best for you.

Oily hair isn’t even the worst possible outcome of not washing your scalp. If you’ve ever gone too long without washing your hair, you may have experienced the phenomenon of your hair actually hurting. This pain around your scalp and roots can be caused by build-up of products and sebum, and if left ignored, can lead to proliferation of Malassezia furfur (a type of yeast-like fungus that is known to cause dandruff). Of course, there are other possible causes of scalp pain as well, such as skin irritation from harsh products.

Use products that are gentle on your scalp

It’s also important not to treat the scalp too harshly. “Stay away from products that have aggressive cleansing agents. The eco-system of the scalp and hair is fragile and can be disrupted very easily with excessive use of products that strip and coat. In order to balance the scalp your first line of defense is to select shampoos with gentle cleansing agents and products that leave no heavy residue on the scalp or hair.”
Essentially, balance is key when it comes to the scalp. For some, washing daily may be too much while for others, once a week is not nearly enough. When you do wash your hair, be sure to choose products that aren’t full of harsh chemicals such as sulfates, alcohol, and artificial fragrance.

Massage your scalp daily, massage it often

Experts suggest regular scalp massages for an easy, natural treatment that you can do at home: “Massage aids in increasing blood flow to the scalp thereby promoting circulation and stimulation to the area–all very helpful at promoting a healthy scalp and optimal hair growth.” They recommend first applying a scalp mask, such as our Stimulus Scalp Mask, which has ingredients like organic aloe vera extract to moisturize and soothe the scalp.

Once the mask is applied, massage the scalp as follows: “Employing the use of both hands, start at the temples and gently but firmly massage the scalp in a circular motion. Avoid friction and intense rubbing back and forth as this has the potential to roughen the cuticle and be too irritating to the skin, which is why this is best done with a mask on the scalp. Continue the motion through the hairline and move back towards the crown ending at the nape of your neck. Repeat twice!” Sounds like the perfect DIY spa treatment to do while binge-watching Netflix on the couch.
If you really want to go the DIY route, you could make a scalp mask yourself with natural moisturizing and antibacterial ingredients such as honey, tea tree oil, olive oil, and even garlic. You can do a scalp massage with a mask weekly, or enjoy a daily massage with just your hands. (Here’s why honey is so good for your skin and scalp.)

If you have a scalp issue such as pain, itching, or dandruff that persists then you should see a dermatologist or trichologist. For most people, however, giving the scalp the attention it needs with regular cleansing and gentle products is all that’s needed for a healthy scalp and beautiful hair.
