Sciatica is one of the most common pain people seek treatment for, aside from neck and shoulder pain. Sciatica happens when the sciatic nerve itself or the root that forms the nerve becomes pinched. It starts from the buttocks to the back of thigh and down to the foot. It may vary form moderate to severe pain. Here are the common causes and treatment methods for sciatica based on Chinese Medicine:

Wind cold damp obstruction: poor Qi and blood flow due to posture or prolonged sitting, especially in a cold environment creates stagnation. The pathogens (wind, cold, dampness) accumulate and obstructing the meridians down the lower limbs. Dampness can be acquired by humid environment or poor diet that weakens the spleen function.

Liver & Kidney deficiency or Qi, Blood, Yin and Yang deficiency: This type is usually exacerbated by fatigue, lack of rest and sleep and usually worsens at night or evening.

Muscular tension or emotional stress: muscular tension can worsen or create sciatica pain. Since the sciatic nerve runs through the Gall Bladder meridian, it can be easily affected by stress or overworking.

Sciatica treatment involves unblocking Qi and Blood stagnation, nourishing Yin and tonifying Yang with the combination of acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine that addresses the internal disharmony. The gall bladder meridian of the foot-Shaoyang (GB) and the bladder meridian of the foot-Taiyang (BL), and the Yang Ling Quan (GB 34) and Huan Tiao (GB 30) are two key “acupuncture points” (acupoints) for treating sciatica. It might be combined with electroacupuncture and also cupping to further enhance the treatment. Moxibustion and acupuncture are the best combo for wind cold damp type of sciatica. Herbal medicine is given based on the root cause, by clearing dampness or nourishing Qi and blood. There are many useful herbs, usually will be customized. The common herbs that are used for sciatica or back pain relief are Du Zhong and Xu Duan.

Massage therapy, stretching and Qi Gong or Yoga. All of these help with Qi flow and subsequently releasing muscle tightness.

The Spleen provides the source of Qi and Blood and the Lung is responsible to bring blood and Qi to the skin. Abundance of Qi from Spleen & Kidney improves collagen of the skin making it healthy, glowing and radiant. These two organs ensure the skin is always nourished. Other organs are also responsible to ensure good circulation. Taking care of the internal is just as important as taking care of the external.

If you have imbalances or deficiency of Qi in the body, your skin might look dull or yellowish, lack of suppleness and dry, sagginess of the muscle, losing collagen, having deep wrinkles and fine lines. You might also experience hair loss or hair graying.

How can Chinese Medicine help in keeping the skin young and healthy?

Lifestyle plays a huge role in keeping the skin healthy. Stress, mood disorders, sleeping past 11pm, and eating unhealthily affects the skin health.

Therefore, it is recommended to keep stress at bay, exercise, eat healthily, and sleep early. Seek for Chinese Medicine treatments like acupuncture and herbal medicine to increase your Qi and blood, balance your Yin & Yang and nourish the Kidney.
Here are some dietary suggestions:
- To improve Qi & Spleen: eat grains like millet, quinoa, amaranth and brown rice, root based food, Chinese chestnut, Chinese herbs such as Shan Yao (Chinese yam), Huang Qi, Ginseng.
- To improve blood: longan, red dates, goji berries, bone broth, meat, lotus root, cherries, figs, pomegranates, dark leafy vegetables and Dang Gui.
- To improve Kidney: walnut, cashew, black sesame, black fungus, black beans, mulberry, blueberries, flax and pumpkin seeds, miso soup and kimchi, spirulina and seaweed.

Tips to practice at home:
- Do acupressure at San Yin Jiao (SP6) for 10 mins on each leg everyday. This point helps to increase the Spleen Qi as well the blood. This is a powerful point as it is a crossing point of Kidney, Spleen and Liver. *This point cannot be pressed if you are pregnant.
- Exercise regularly! Exercising circulates the Qi and blood in the body.
- Avoid excessive caffeine, alcohol and to***co.
- Stay Hydrateted💕

HIVES/URTICARIA,(荨麻疹) Commonly known as hives, is defined as a kind of skin rash notable for pale red, itchy bumps caused by allergic reactions to internal and external agents. This skin condition is characterised by wheals (reddish swellings) or itching that occurs almost daily for more than six weeks. It comes and goes on various parts of the body and can be triggered by an allergic reaction to food, drugs, infections or stress.

In Chinese medicine, this condition can arise when :

1.The lungs, intestines, stomach, liver and kidneys are deficient. The skin is a reflection of the lungs. If your lungs are not working well, your skin becomes unhealthy, itchy and dry. One factor that can cause the lungs to malfunction is ageing.

2. A lack of qi (vital energy), blood and yin (the element that cools organs), poor blood circulation or blood stasis.Elderly people with general weakness and chronic diseases may also be unable to produce sufficient qi and blood to nourish the skin.

3. Pathogenic factors, such as wind, heat, cold, dryness and dampness.Wind and heat, on the other hand, may trigger angry and red "heat hives"; map-like patches that have a burning sensation. .

WHAT CAN YOU DO?

1.Take herbal remedies, acupuncture and cupping.

2. Avoid temperature changes, wind, heat and cold.

3. Reduce stress levels and improve blood circulation by doing light exercises such as brisk walking, yoga, taichi and qigong.

4. Abstain from alcohol, spicy ingredients, cold or raw food and red meat such as beef.

5.Sleep early and have enough rest so that your body can produce more qi and blood to nourish your skin.

6.Avoid any allergens, such as skincare products, hair dyes and seafood, that may have triggered your urticaria.

If you're wondering what you should eat & what to avoid when you're infected with Covid-19, look no further! The tips shown above are based on Chinese Medicine theories. The general foods are neutral and helps the body to not produce more phlegm damp and putting more strain on the Lungs and Spleen. The general tips are suitable for anyone with flu, cough and even for post covid.

Chinese Medicine views condition holistically and our body condition changes by day. Therefore, it is more suitable to check in with your physician to know what syndrome differentiation you are having. The same Covid infection might not have the same signs and symptoms. Below are some examples of syndrome differentiation and nutrition tips:

1. Wind cold attack - infection is usually manifested with no or mild fever, no sweating, more chills and aversion to cold: Food such as warm soup with ginger and spring onion are suitable to promote sweat and expel pathogen. They are also not suitable to take too much cooling fruits such as coconut and watermelon.

2. Wind heat attack - high fever or fever with sweats, thirsty: Not recommended to take warming food like ginger. Chrysanthemum, coconut water and watermelon are suitable to quench thirst and cool the body down.

Most conditions of Covid will be combined with damp phlegm. The tips for phlegm damp are shown in the diagram above. It is important to eat anything in moderation and consult with a practitioner if you are unsure. Everyone has unique reactions to foods, especially with different types of fruits. You know your body best and eat more food that makes you feel better and avoid those that makes you feel worse or worsening your condition.🤗💕

Covid-19 affects everyone differently. Whilst some don’t have any symptoms at all, others may have severe, moderate, or mild symptoms. Most people recover and return to normal health; however, there may be lingering symptoms that can last for weeks or months.

After the 5 days quarantine period, you may not be infectious anymore but the symptoms may still persist. Some of the common lingering symptoms are loss of smell and taste, cough, digestive issues, fatigue, mental fogginess, sluggish, easily get breathless, excessive sweating, headache, demotivated, and depression.

Listen to your body and get enough rest when needed. Your body is losing a lot of Qi fighting the virus. That is why you get tired easily and have chronic fatigue. Start exercising after you feel better but start slow and avoid heavy strenuous exercise at first.

Eat balanced diet and eat on time. The virus affects the body with a lot of internal dampness which can weaken the stomach. Eating the right food and avoid damp producing food such as cold, raw food and dairy helps. Take some supplements to support immune health.

Acupuncture and herbal medicine are great supplementary treatments for Covid-19 recovery. It helps a lot with the lingering symptoms by strengthening your Lung Qi and other organs that are affected in Chinese Medicine theory. Guasha and cupping are also great! Our physician will access your condition first before suggesting the best treatment for your recovery.
