When I started accompanying seniors to hospital appointments in 2019, “Senior Concierge” was not a term many people were familiar with.

I simply saw a need. There were seniors navigating busy hospitals alone, while their children struggled to take time away from work and family responsibilities.

Over the years, our team has learnt that hospital accompaniment is about much more than being physically present. It means knowing how to navigate different departments, listening carefully during consultations, noting important instructions and keeping the family informed.

I’m glad that more people now recognise the importance of this service. It means more seniors can receive the support they need.

At Oretha’s Senior Care, we will continue drawing on the experience we have built since 2019. One senior. One family. One appointment at a time.

It started with accompanying my own dad to his hospital appointments.

During those visits, I began noticing other elderly patients trying to navigate the hospital alone... finding the right counter, waiting for their number, listening to the doctor’s instructions and collecting their medication afterwards.

I kept wondering: Who makes sure they understand what happens next? Who accompanies them home? Who updates their family?

In 2019, that concern became my mission which is to create a service where seniors would have someone dependable beside them throughout their hospital journey.

That was how Oretha’s Senior Concierge began.

Today, our Senior Concierges provide transportation, help with registration, accompany seniors during consultations, take note of the doctor’s instructions, collect medication and return them safely home. Their families also receive an update after the appointment.

We don’t replace the family. We simply step in when they cannot be there, so their parent never has to manage everything alone.

We recently set up a wall filled with photos of our seniors in their element. Every day, they will stop, look at the photos and try to remember the occasion, their friends’ names and even our names. 🥰
But what stands out even more is the sense of belonging they have found as a community.
I can still remember each of their first days at daycare — some anxious, some shy, and all a little unsure about meeting new people. But my oh my, look how far they have all come! ❤️

They are learning to adapt, learning to make new friends and, most importantly, learning to support and care for one another.

When they look at the photos on the wall, it is not just another picture hanging there. It is a memory — a moment they shared, a face they recognise, and a reminder of the friendships they have built.
And we hope that, even as time passes, these little reminders will continue to bring them joy, spark a memory and make them smile. ❤️

Because sometimes, it’s the simplest memories that mean the most.

Over the years, I have spoken with many sons and daughters caring for a parent with Alzheimer’s.

They tell me about the repeated questions, the difficult days and the heartbreak of watching someone they love change. They also speak about the guilt they feel when they become tired, frustrated or simply need a break.

I may not fully understand what each family goes through, but I have learnt this: behind every diagnosis is still a person.... and beside that person is often a caregiver doing their best.

Their parent may forget a name or struggle to express themselves but they can still feel kindness, comfort, respect and love.

This World Alzheimer’s Day, let us be gentler with both the person living with the condition and the family caring for them.

See the person, not just the condition. And see the caregiver too.

I was having a plate of rojak with my fam when this thought suddenly came to me: this isn’t just food -- it looks a little like Malaysia.

Every ingredient is different. Each has its own flavour, texture and character. Yet when everything is mixed together, somehow, it works beautifully.

That is Malaysia to me.

We come from different cultures, practise different beliefs and carry different stories. We don’t have to become the same to belong together. Our differences are what give this country its colour, richness and flavour.

Like a good plate of rojak, Malaysia wouldn’t be Malaysia if even one piece were missing.

“Mum, sit down. I’ll do it.”

We often say this out of love. But after years of caring for seniors, I’ve learnt that stepping in too quickly can sometimes take away their chance to try.

Slower doesn’t always mean unable.

Before helping, ask: “Would you like to try first?” or “Shall we do it together?”

At our daycare, encourage our seniors to do what they can, at their own pace, with support nearby when needed.

We need to trust and give them a chance to say that they can do it.
