The 15th day of the CNY is known as the Lantern Festival (Yuan Xiao Jie), marking the final day of the traditional two-week celebration. It occurs on the first full moon of the lunar year, symbolizing the return of spring and family reunion.
Chap Goh Mei: In Southeast Asia (especially Malaysia and Singapore), the day is popularly known as Chap Goh Mei (Hokkien for "15th night").
Chinese Valentine's Day: It is traditionally considered a romantic holiday. Historically, it was one of the few times young women could go out freely to admire lanterns and meet potential suitors.
Orange Tossing: A unique tradition in Penang involves single women writing their names on mandarin oranges and tossing them into the sea or river, hoping to find a good husband.
Eating Tangyuan: Families gather to eat tangyuan (or yuanxiao), sweet glutinous rice balls. Their round shape symbolizes "reunion" (tuanyuan) and family wholeness.
Lantern Displays & Riddles: Streets are decorated with colorful lanterns, and "lantern riddles" are written on slips of paper for people to solve as an intellectual challenge.
Performances: The day is often celebrated with vibrant dragon and lion dances, as well as fireworks to ward off bad luck.

The 13th & 14th day of the CNY, is a day of physical and spiritual "cleansing" and preparation for the final grand celebration of the Lantern Festival (Yuan Xiao Jie), which occurs on the 15th day.
People visit lantern fairs to buy decorations or make their own.
Families often begin lighting up their decorations and lanterns on this evening to "start up" the festivities for the following day.
Food Prep: It is common to spend time rolling tangyuan (sweet glutinous rice balls), which are the essential food for the 15th day.
Cultural Activities: New Year traditions continue with temple visits and public performances such as dragon and lion dances.
Folklore: The "Ablaze" Village
According to one legend, the 14th day is significant because it was the first of three days (14th–16th) that villagers hung red lanterns and set off firecrackers to trick the Jade Emperor into thinking their village was already on fire, thus sparing them from divine destruction.
Dietary Cleansing: After nearly two weeks of heavy, rich festive food, it is traditional to eat vegetarian meals. A common dish is simple rice porridge with mustard greens to "cleanse" the digestive system and give the body a rest.
