My second day in Malaysia I went to record Yan Soh @yan_soh_ at her home in the Shah Alam area. Yan started practicing sound baths around 4 years ago during covid when thinking what to do with the second half of her life. Like Carolyn, she plays many instruments. She told me about her studio in the mountains that is surrounded by the sounds of nature, a place where I will definitely be visiting next time I come. We recorded in a small converted bedroom in her house that had just finished being renovated. I was the first official visitor. The early morning light filtered through sheer curtains and the pastel paint gave a comforting glow . The cool nighttime air still lingered in the shaded room. She had a small but meaningful collection of instruments carefully laid out in a circle around her. Two gongs along the back wall, rain stick, flutes, and three curious metal bowls in front of me. 'These three bowls follow me to the children palliative home for children who have cancer. These are my charity bowls. I bring them when I do therapy for kids.' Yan's 40-minute session begins with her two gongs that she slowly cultivates into a dense wall of sound, dreams, and silences. It will be 30 minutes before she plays another instrument. The hard parallel walls emphasized some of the lower frequencies amplifying them enough to pe*****te my chest and stall my breathing. She transitions to the humble charity bowls and a chime before ending with a moving native flute song. A memorable session. Sessions out in August.
