HYDROQUINONE (HQ) has been well-known as an effective skin-lightening agents to suppress melanin production but the controversy sparked about this ingredient is related to its safety profile where it can be toxic to some living cells and potentially cause OCHORNOSIS (a bluish-black discoloration of the skin tissue), hence being banned in many countries.

Researches have come out with a safe derivative option of hydroquinone, known as ARBUTIN, extracted from plant such as bearberry, blueberry, cranberry and mulberry without the side effect and irritation coming from HQ. Moreover, it actually works magically by slowly releasing HQ over time to inhibit tyrosinase, an enzyme involved in melanin synthesis.

Brands have been highlighting ALPHA ARBUTIN to be better in efficacy compared to BETA ARBUTIN (also known as arbutin) when the reality is, the researches are not suffice to support this statement. Hence, people can choose either one or both in one formulation to reduce hyperpigmentation (PIH) because they work with same effectiveness.
