Our lives have certainly changed. We need protection from COVID19. We need to sanitize, disinfect but with safe products from ethical companies. The animal feed mill company has suddenly become a disinfectant producer, sanitizers are mushrooming in all shapes, all kinds of brand names and sizes, some even made in the backyard.

A study shows General consumers are confused, price is the buying criteria, next is the nearest available. What is not known to many that it may sound simple to make a sanitizer but how it is made and where it is made are important for your protection. Legally, sanitizers has to be made in a GMP environment, which has to be approved by the Ministry of Health.

There are stringent guidelines. For those who are unfamiliar with GMP, in simple terms it is a “clean room environment”, not only sanitizers, any products used on the body such as hand soap, shampoo, lotion, etc not have to be manufactured in a Ministry of Health approved facility. The sanitizer that you buy should carry 4 basic elements on the bottle:
1. Ingredient list
2. Manufacturing and Expiry Date
3. Full name of the manufacturer or the Distributor
4. Batch number

These are 3 fundamental requirements set by the Ministry of Health (MOH). Of course, manufacturers who have access to MOH can check for you whether the brand or product is registered with MOH. It is important, as this is your assurance that the product is made in a GMP facility and the ingredients are approved.

Not all alcohol can be used on sanitizers. For example, Methanol is a cheap form of alcohol that can be made into sanitizers but very detrimental to Health. Making products not in a GMP/Clean room environment have high chances of contamination. Hence, instead of killing germs, you may be adding them to your hands/body.

Surface sanitizers and disinfectants which are made for killing germs on tables, doorknobs, chairs, floor and other surfaces do not come under the jurisdiction of MOH. Hence, the only way is to check up the establishment is through their websites.
