The doorway to one's brain is through the ears...
Mileah has been diagnosed with a congenital bilatetal profound sensorineural hearing loss.This means that without the necessary amplification sound is not able to reach her brain and she cannot hear speech at a conversational level or event at a higher itensity level.Without the ability to hear speech ,she will not be able to develop normal speech and language.The only way in which enough sound can get through to her brain is by a cochlear implant.Without this form of intervention Mileah may struggle to develop a "conventional" communication system which will allow her to speak and use spoken language.......
Although Mileah is using powerful hearing aids at this stage,and although she has access to sound through them,it remains 'aids' and the inner ear/brain can only receive limited access to auditory information.There is a window of opportunity up till the age of about 3 to 4 years where the cochlear implantation is able to overcome this situation,but if it is delayed too long and exceeds this limit it becomes very difficult to help her to develop a brain that is able to listen and use speech and language.After the cochlear implant Mileah will also need rehabilitation service for a period of at least two years in order to teach her to hear,to use the cochlear speech processor and and to develop speech and language.

The total cost of a cochlear implant and speech processor is approximately N$450 000.00

The family also need to have a savings plan to cover the cost of repairs and replacements or upgrade of the speech processor(this is the instrument that is worn outside her head like a hearing aid to convery acoustic energy into electrical energy in order for the implant to stimulate the auditory nerve).The cost of a new processor is approximately N$150 000.00-and needs to be replaced around every 5-7 years.
