Dangers of Wound
Infection such as teta**s
Scarring
Bleeding
Shock
Aims of treatment of Wound
To arrest bleeding
To treat for shock
To prevent infection
To promote healing
To prevent sepsis (infection in which pus is produced)
Caution
Do not talk on wound
Do not use iodine on very large wounds except on punctured wounds to induce bleeding.
Do not remove foreign bodies (e.g. nail or pin in case of punctured wound)
Treatment
Place the casualty in a most comfortable position
Reassure the casualty
Arrest bleeding
Guide against or treat for shock
Apply cold compress in case of contusion
Clean, dress and bandage all wounds as necessary
Transport a casualty with severe wounds to the nearest hospital.
Note: Wound affects the skin (deep or light) while Injury affects the systems in the body.

TYPES OF WOUND
Depending on the cause and appearance, wound can be classified into the following using the acronym PLICAG:
PUNCTURED WOUND: It is caused by sharps, pointed objects such as; nails and pins. The risk of infection in this type of wound is very high. Bleeding should be encouraged.
LACERATED WOUND: This is a wound caused by irregular-sharp object, which displaces jagged and blunt breaking of the skin. Laceration can also be caused by crushing or ripping forces. The risk of infection is high.
INCISED WOUND: This is a wound which displays a clean cut on the skin (incision); it is caused by a sharp edged object. Incised wound may bleed profusely than any other wound.
CONTUSED WOUNDS: Contused wound is a wound caused by heavy blow or blunt object. It is characterized by swelling and dislocolouration as a result of internal bleeding (Haematoma). Contused wound may also be a sign of internal damage of tissues.
ABRASION: This is also known as GRAZE. It is a type of wound which often affects the top layer of the skin; it is caused by violent rubbing of the skin on rough surface or friction burn.
GUNSHOT WOUND: Gunshot wound as the name implies is a wound caused by bullet or missile, driven into the body often resulting into serious internal injuries. Gun-shot wound is characterized by a small and often neat entry; and a large and rough exist wounds.
Causes of Wound
Sharp pointed or edged objects
Rough surface floor or wall
Heavy blunt objects
Irregular objects
Gun – bullet.

WOUNDS
Wound is the abnormal break in the continuity of the body tissue which permits the escape of blood (and other body fluid) and entering of germs.

Bleeding is also controlled through the pressure points by pressing the arteries against the underlying bones, i.e. applying pressure on it, which will obstruct the flow of blood to the injured parts. There are eleven (11) pairs of major pressures points in the body. They are as follow:
S/N
PRESSURE POINTS
ARTERY
POSITION
Occipital
At the back of the head
Temporal
At the side of the fore head, very close to the ear.
Facial
At the hollow of the chick
Carotid
At the side of the neck close to the Adams apple
Subclavian
At the hollow of the clavicle
Auxiliary
Under the armpit
Brachial
At the upper arm (humerous)
Radial
At the lower arm base of the wrist
Palmar
At the hollow of palm
Femoral
At the hollow of the femur
11
Tibia
Dorsal
At the ankle.
CATEGORIES OF BLEEDING
EXTERNAL BLEEDING: This is a kind of bleeding that occur as a result of sustaining an open wound, which brings the visibility of blood on the outside of the body.
INTERNAL BLEEDING: This is a kind of bleeding that is not visible on the outside of the skin, but can be suspected when the casualty vomits blood or when blood or body fluid containing some blood comes out from the natural body orifices such as the ear, nose, mouth, virginal, a**s etc. This category of bleeding occurs as a result of internal damage of some organs of the body such as the kidney, heart, lungs, intestine, etc.
STAGES OF BLEEDING
PRIMARY BLEEDING: Bleeding is said to be in the primary stage when it occurs immediately after sustaining an injury.
SECONDARY BLEEDING: At this stage, bleeding occurs sometime after sustaining an injury.
REACTIONARY BLEEDING: At this stage, bleeding occurs as a result of mismanagement of old wounds; secondary injury or when the heart suddenly regenerates its force.
CAUSES OF BLEEDING
The under listed are common cause of bleeding.
Rupture of blood vessels
Fracture
Wounds
Severe burns
Disease of the blood vessel
Disease of the blood itself.
Signs and Symptoms
Pale face
Cold and clammy skin
Thirstiness
Shock
Restlessness
Dizziness
Pain
Rapid pulse
Sweating
Loss of consciousness
Fast and weak pulse.
Bleeding from orifices
Shallow breathing
Fainting
Treatment
Place the casualty in a comfortable position
Reassure the casualty
Arrest bleeding, bandage and elevate the affected part if possible
Guide against or treat for shock
If casualty complains of thirst, give sips of water
If necessary dispose the casualty.

BLEEDING
[HAEMORRHAGE]
Bleeding also known as HAEMORRHAGE is the escape of blood from the damaged blood vessels. Bleeding often occur after wound has been sustained. Depending on whether the wound sustained is open or closed, bleeding can occur either internally or externally.
TYPES OF BLEEDING
Depending on the blood vessel that is damaged, bleeding can either be arterial, venous or capillary.
ARTERIAL BLEEDING: This is a type of bleeding that occurs as a result of damage to the arteries, such bleeding is characterized by a bright red coloured blood which jets out from the spot of injuries. This blood is oxygen-rich i.e. it contains oxygen.
VENOUS BLEEDING: This type of bleeding results from damage to the veins; it is characterized by a dark red coloured blood which flows out from the spot of injury. This blood contains little or no oxygen.
CAPILLARY BLEEDING: This results from damaged blood capillaries in the body; it is characterized by a purple red coloured blood which oozes from the spot of injury.
