Chapter 15: The House on Maple Hill

The buses rolled into Maple Ridge like ghosts at the edge of the world.

No noise. No movement. Just waterlogged streets reflecting that eerie violet glow hanging in the sky like something watching… waiting.

Hunger had stripped them down to their bones. Eight survivors, barely holding together. Even breathing felt like work now.

Alex slowed the bus as they reached the hill.

That was when he saw it
The house.

White walls. Iron gate. Still standing like it refused to die with the rest of the world.

“We stop here,” he said quietly, voice steady despite the exhaustion clawing at him. “We check it first. No risks.”

No one argued.
They didn’t have the strength to.

Inside, the house felt… wrong in a different way.

Not broken.

Not destroyed.

Just… abandoned.

Like the people who lived there vanished mid-breath.
Clean floors. Dusty furniture. Closets still full.

And then.....

Voices.

From below.

Everyone froze.

Weapons tightened in shaking hands.

Then the basement door creaked open… and five figures stepped out.

Alive.

Human.

Barely.

Relief and tension collided instantly.

When introductions were done, the number became thirteen.

More people.
More hope.
But also…
More mouths to feed.

That night, they stayed quiet.
No lights.
No noise.
Just survival.

But for the first time in days… they had something close to comfort.
Hot water.
Clean skin.

A moment to feel human again.
In the bathroom, steam filled the air as Alex stood behind Elara, slowly washing her hair.

Not rushed.
Not desperate.
Careful.

Like he was afraid she might disappear if he moved too fast.
“You’re still the most beautiful thing in this world,” he murmured against her shoulder.

She turned to him, eyes soft, tired… but full.
“You still look at me like that?” she whispered.

“Always.”

What followed wasn’t hunger.
Was something deeper.
A quiet need to feel alive again.

They moved together slowly, gently, like the world outside didn’t exist for those few minutes. Every touch carried meaning now. Every breath mattered.

“I’m not losing you,” Alex said softly against her skin.

“You won’t,” she replied, holding him tighter. “Not ever.”

Their connection flared again -.gold and shadow blending in a soft glow that wrapped around them like something sacred instead of dangerous.

For the first time in days…

They felt whole.

Elsewhere in the house, something else was happening.
People were finding each other.

Not out of lust.

But out of fear… loneliness… the need to not face the end alone.

Quiet connections formed.

Hands held.

Bodies close.

Hearts trying to remember what it felt like to be safe.

Three small lights in the darkness.

And for one night…

The house felt alive.

Chapter 16: Jealousy and the Food Run

Morning came with tension.
Not loud, just… there.
Heavy, lingering.
People noticed things now.
The way eyes followed Alex.

The way the new girl Lena, looked at him just a second too long.

The way whispers started forming in corners.

Jealousy didn’t need strength to survive.

It fed on weakness.

Elara felt it.

Of course she did.

But instead of reacting…

She simply held Alex’s hand tighter.

A quiet claim, He’s mine.

By noon, reality hit harder than emotions.

Hunger was back.

Worse.

Alex stood in the living room, voice steady, leadership cutting through the tension like a blade.

“We need food. Now.”

Simple, clear..but everyone know it's easier said than done

The plan formed quickly.

Small team was formed quickly

When Alex chose himself to go..

Elara didn’t stop him.

But her eyes said everything.

“Come back to me,” she whispered.

He pulled her close, resting his forehead against hers.

“I always do.”

The trip was hell.

Empty streets.

Too quiet.

Too still.

Which meant danger was close.

The attack came fast.

Ugly.

Not like before.

This time… they were weak.

Every swing slower.

Every movement heavier.
But they survived.
Barely.

When they returned..
They had food.

Real food.

Enough to keep them alive.

But the cost…

Marcus.
The moment Alex saw the veins spreading..
He already knew.

There was no speech this time.
“I got you,” Alex said quietly.

And ended it.
Back inside the house, no one celebrated the food.
They ate slowly.

Silently.

Every bite mixed with grief.
Later…

Alex found Elara again.

“I kept my promise,” he whispered.
She touched his face gently.

“I knew you would.”

They held each other again, closer than before.

Because now they both understood something clearly,
Every time he left…

There was a chance he wouldn’t come back.

Around them, the house was quieter.

People clung to each other a little tighter.

Spoke a little softer.

In the distance

More portals opened.

Bigger.

Closer.

Something was coming

TBC....

They found shelter…
They found food…
But at what cost?

Do you think the house is safe… or already being watched?

Chapter 13: The Silence of Empty Stomachs

Three days.
No real food.
Hunger had become something alive inside them.
Twisting.
Burning.
Breaking them slowly.

The survivors sat in the cafeteria.
Eight… barely holding on.
“I feel like I’m disappearing…” Priya whispered.
Ryan snapped.
“This is her fault!”
He pointed at Elara.
Silence dropped.
Heavy.
Dangerous.

“Her blood started this!” he continued.
“Maybe she should fix it!”
No one defended her.
Not immediately.
Elara looked down.

Shadows curling weakly around her wrists.
Not angry.
Just… tired.
Then Alex stood.
Slow.
Calm.
Dead serious.

“We suffer the same,” he said quietly.
“We survive the same.”
His eyes hardened.
“Blame won’t save you.”
No one argued.

They searched the school one last time.
Nothing.
Just empty shelves… and dust.

Then—
Movement.
Zombies.
Inside the gym.
The fight was slow.
Messy.
Weak.
Ryan was too slow.
They grabbed him.
Black veins spread instantly.
Alex didn’t hesitate.
He dropped to his knees beside him.
Eyes full.
Heart breaking.
One strike.
Clean.
Merciful.

“Rest, brother…”
Seven left.
That night...
In a quiet corner—

Alex held Elara close.
Like she might disappear too.
“I hate seeing you like this,” he whispered.
She looked up at him, eyes soft.
“Then stay with me…”
They held each other.

Not out of desire...
But survival.
Connection.
Love.
For a moment…
The hunger faded.
-----------

They're starving…
And now they’re turning on each other.

Who do you blame?
The curse or the leaders?

Chapter 14: Shadows on the Road to Maple Ridge
The buses moved at sunrise.
Slow.
Heavy.
Hunger had turned them into shadows of themselves.
Every movement hurt.
Every breath felt empty.

Above them—
Portals glowed closer.
Watching.
Waiting.
Alex gripped the wheel tightly.

“We make it to Maple Ridge,” he said.
He had to believe it.
Or everything would fall apart.
Inside the bus—

Tension snapped again.
“Maybe we should’ve split up…” someone muttered.
Eyes turned to Elara.
Again.
She said nothing.

Just held Alex’s hand tighter.
Then—
The road blocked.
Zombies.
A full pack.
The fight was brutal.
Alex’s blade flickered.

Weak.
Elara’s shadows moved fast!
Protecting.
Pulling people back.

Saving what little strength they had left.
Somehow..
They survived.

No one died.
But no one felt safe.

By dusk—
They reached Maple Ridge.
The town was dead.
Flooded streets.
Broken buildings.
Silence.
No food.
No hope.

That night..
They camped in an empty warehouse.
Alex led Elara upstairs.
Laid her down gently.

“You’re carrying everyone,” he whispered.
“Let me carry you too.”
They stayed close.
Quiet.

Holding onto each other like it was the only thing left.
Downstairs...
Others did the same.
Because in a world like this…
Connection was the only thing keeping them human.
Eight survivors.

One more night closer to breaking.
But in the distance..
A faint glow.
Maple Ridge wasn’t empty.
Something was waiting.

Chapter 12: The Road to Silver Lake

Rain fell softly that morning.
And with it...
Another goodbye.
Chloe.

She had been smiling the night before.
Laughing.

Alive.
Now..
She was gone.

The infection had spread in her sleep.
Alex didn’t let anyone else see.
He carried her outside.

Buried her quietly beneath a tree.
He placed a football beside her.
A piece of the world they lost.
Nine became eight.

No one spoke as they packed up.
The road to Silver Lake stretched ahead...
Cold.
Silent.
Endless.

Elara drove this time.
Alex sat beside her, hand resting on hers.
A silent promise.

Halfway there....
The forest changed.
Ruins.

Broken stone.
Glowing vines.
And movement.
Zombies.

But not normal ones.
They moved like wolves.
Hunting.

The attack came fast.
Alex jumped from the moving bus...
Golden blade forming instantly.
He fought differently now.

Cleaner.
Sharper.
Stronger.

But every kill still cost him something.
Elara’s shadows protected the others....

Pulling survivors to safety.
Holding the line.
This time...
No one died.
A small victory.
But in this world…

Even small victories mattered.
That night...
They reached Silver Lake High.

Another school.
Another reminder.

They sat around a small fire.
Quiet.
Tired.
Still breathing.

Alex walked with Elara to the empty field.
“I love you,” he said simply.
Not because of the apocalypse.
Not because they were alone.
But because it was real.

“Then let’s rebuild everything,” she whispered.
“Together.”
Above them....
The sky shifted.
A new portal opened in the distance.
Bigger than the rest.
Darker.
Something was coming...

Chapter 11: Ironvale Dawn

The convoy rolled into Ironvale Military Base.
Twenty-three survivors left.

Two more had died during the night.
Quick. Mercy kills.
By Alex’s own hand.

The base stood broken...
Cracked concrete.
Abandoned vehicles.
Flickering lights.
No soldiers.

Just silence.
Alex stood on the bus, golden aura glowing faintly.
“We camp here tonight,” he said.

“Tomorrow - we move again.”
No one questioned him.
They trusted him.
They had to.
That night…

While the others settled into the barracks-
Alex took Elara’s hand and led her away.

Inside a quiet officer’s room,
The world finally slowed down.
“I’m tired, Ace…” she whispered.
He pulled her close.

“I know.”
No rush.
No chaos.

Just two people holding onto each other in a dying world.
They stayed like that for a long time.

Breathing together.
Grounding each other.
“You feel like home,” Alex murmured softly.
Elara closed her eyes.

“And you’re the only light I have left.”
Their powers flickered gently..,
Gold and shadow blending.
Not violent this time.
Peaceful

For the first time in days…
They weren’t fighting.
They were healing.
Across the barracks....
Something else was happening.

Lucas sat beside Priya.
Both quiet.
Both broken in their own ways.
“I don’t want to die without living,” she said softly.

He understood.
And in that dark room...
They found something small.
Something human.
Something worth holding onto.

For one night…
They weren’t survivors.
They were just people again

Chapter 10: Warlord of the Wastes

Thirty survivors.
That’s all that was left.
The road to Ironvale stretched ahead—
Silent.
Empty.
Waiting.

But the world had changed.
Zombies weren’t just roaming anymore.
They moved in squads.
Used weapons.
Hunted like soldiers.
And Alex?
He had changed too.
Every loss made him stronger.
Faster.
Colder.
Golden light… now edged with something darker.
He could summon a blade.
Control it.

Fight like something built for war.
Elara wasn’t the same either.
Her shadows could now control weaker undead.
Scout ahead..

Move like an army of their own.
Together—
They weren’t just leading anymore.
They were evolving.
Inside a burned-out diner—
Tension snapped.

One survivor spoke up.
“We should split up.”
Another shook his head.
“We should hide.”

Alex slammed his fist on the table.
It cracked instantly.
“We stay together.”
Silence.

“We follow one path. My path.”
No one argued.
They understood now.
This wasn’t a group anymore.
It was a force.

That night—
They prepared for war.
By morning...
They reached Ironvale.
Helicopters circled in the distance.

Hope.
Maybe.
But below?
A massive horde.
Thousands.
And at the front—
Something bigger.
Stronger.

A creature in a torn military uniform.
Watching.
Waiting.
Leading.

Alex climbed onto the bus.
Golden blade forming in his hand.
Elara’s shadows wrapping around him like a living crown.

The survivors looked up at them.
Not just leaders anymore.
Something else.

“This is our country now,” Alex said.
“Let’s take it back.”

They reached Oakridge at dawn.

A college town…
Turned slaughterhouse.
The buses rolled in quietly.
Too quietly.

No one noticed at first.
Not the silence.
Not the tension.
Not her.

Sarah.
Tyler’s little sister.
She sat in the corner of the bus, arm covered, head down.
Shaking.
Hiding it.

By the time the screaming started....
It was already too late.
She turned in the middle of the night.
Inside the bus.

Mia was the first to fall.
A scream.
A struggle.
Teeth sinking deep.

Alex burst in,
Golden light blazing-
But Sarah was already gone.
Elara’s shadows pinned her down.
But the damage was done.
Mia looked up at Alex.

Tears.
Fear.
Begging

“Ace… please… I don’t want to die…”
Silence.
Heavy.
Unavoidable.
Alex didn’t hesitate.
Two shots.
Clean.
Final.

The bus fell quiet.
Too quiet.
Thirty left.
Alex stepped off the bus alone.
Walked to the ruined football field nearby.
Fists glowing.
Breathing hard.
Breaking.
Elara followed him.
Didn’t speak.
Didn’t ask.
She just pulled him close.
Grounded him.
Held him together.

“You’re losing everything,” she whispered.
He gripped her like she was the last thing left.
“Then don’t leave me too.”

Stronger.
Darker.

“you die first.”

Tension snapped.

Alex stepped in, golden aura flaring.

“Enough.”

One word.

But it carried weight.

“We fight together… or we d*e.”

No one argued after that.

They understood now.

Chapter 7: Roadblock Meat Grinder

The buses stopped.

Five miles to Blackwood… and the road was already a graveyard.

Twenty wrecked cars blocked the highway.

And behind them?

Twenty zombies.

Not normal ones.

These ones held guns.

Their glowing violet eyes locked onto the buses like hunters waiting for prey.

Alex exhaled slowly.
“Everybody stay inside. Elara, with me. Tyler—roof. Pick them off.”

No hesitation. No fear.
Just command.

They either broke through…
or d1ed here.

The moment they stepped out

—
Gunfire exploded.

Bullets slammed into metal.

Alex moved first.

Golden light burst from his body as he sprinted forward—too fast, too sharp.

Like he was back on the field… breaking ankles.

Except now..

He was breaking skĂşlls.

Elara’s shadows snapped through the air, dragging zombies off their feet… crushing them mid-air.

For a moment..

They were winning.

Then everything changed.

Tyler screamed.

A zombie had climbed the bus.

Its teeth sank deep into his leg.

Dark veins spread instantly.

Alex froze.

Tyler raised his gun, shaking.

“Don’t let me turn, Ace… please…”

Mia was already crying inside the bus.

Elara gently pulled the gun from Tyler’s hand.

Silence fell.

Heavy.

Final.

Alex stepped forward… and pulled him into a quick hug.

“You fought good, man.”
Then—

He stood on the bus like something no longer human.

“We scavenge. Two hours. Then we move.”

No one argued.

No one questioned.

They just followed.

That night…

Behind a locked office door,
Grief turned into something darker.

Alex held Elara like she was the only thing keeping him from breaking.

“They keep dying…” he whispered.

Her fingers tightened on his shirt.

“Then don’t lose yourself too.”

Chapter 3: Sin in the Shed

The metal door rattled again.

Something outside clawed at it.

Hungry.

Violent.

Getting closer.

Alex didn’t look back.

He had Elara pinned against the wall, breath rough, adrenaline still pumping from the chaos outside.

“Mine,” he growled, voice low and intense.

“Monster or not… you’re mine.”

Elara didn’t pull away.

She leaned in instead—eyes glowing faintly, something dark and powerful flickering beneath the surface.

“Then prove it,” she whispered.

The air between them burned.

Not just desire—

Power.

Every touch sent something through Alex’s body.

Something new.

Stronger.

Faster.

Alive.

Outside—

A body slammed hard against the door.

Screams echoed across the field.
The world was collapsing.

Inside..

They held onto the only thing that felt real.
Each other.

Then...

CRACK.

The door gave way.

A zombie burst in.

Bigger.

Faster.

Wrong.

Alex moved instantly.

Golden light exploded around him as he stepped forward
And drove his fist straight through it.

Silence followed.

Heavy.

Unreal.

Elara stared at him.
“…You’re changing.”

Alex looked at his glowing hands.

Then at her.

“Yeah,” he said quietly.

Chapter 4: Dorm of the Damned
_________

They ran.

Across a campus painted in blood and chaos.

Alex moved like lightning.

Stronger.

Faster.

Every fight making him more dangerous.

By the time they reached the athletes’ dorm..

A group of survivors had already barricaded themselves inside.

The moment the door opened...

Mia rushed him.

“Ace! You’re alive!”

She clung to him, shaking.

Relieved.

Elara didn’t move.

But the shadows around her hands… tightened.

Alex noticed.

And instead of stepping away—

He pulled Elara closer.

Close enough to make a statement.

“Careful,” he said calmly.

“I’ve got someone who doesn’t like sharing.”

Mia froze.

The message was clear.

Tension filled the room.

Not just fear.

Something else.

Something dangerous.

Later…

Behind a closed door—

Elara pushed him onto the bed, eyes dark.

“Was she important?” she asked quietly.

Alex smirked slightly.

“Not like you.”

That was all it took.

Their connection flared again-----

Stronger.

More intense.

Like something was linking them beyond normal human limits.

When it faded—

Something new remained.

A mark.

A bond.

Elara traced it slowly.

“My bloodline started this,” she admitted softly.

“A curse sealed long ago… now broken.”

Alex didn’t flinch.

“Then we end it.”

A scream cut through the hallway.

Mia’s voice.

“The dead—they’re inside! And they’re… talking!”

Alex stood immediately.

Golden light returning.

Elara’s shadows rising to meet it.

He looked back at her, a small dangerous smile forming.

“Ready?”

She smiled back.

Dark.

Unshaken.

“Always.”

Chapter 2: Bleachers and Blood

Elara came to Ridge University to stop the apocalypse.

She just didn’t expect it to start… with the football team.

The metal under the stands was cold against her back as she waited, heart hammering.

She’d planned to tell him everything tonight.

The curse in her blood.

The nightmares.

The reason she came here in the first place.

But the stadium was already waking something up.

And it was too late.
____________

Alex burst around the corner.

Jersey torn. Blood on his shoulder. Eyes wild

“Elara, what the hell is happening out there?”

Before she could answer

A scream tore through the night.

Something moved under the bleachers.

Something that used to be human.

Alex didn’t hesitate.

One strike.

Bone cracked.

And then… his fists flickered with gold light.
He froze.

“…What did I just do?”

Elara’s chest tightened.

“No…” she whispered. “It’s already starting.”

Campus was collapsing.

Friends were turning.

And the sky above the stadium… began to tear open.

Alex looked at her. Really look. “You knew?”

The possessiveness in his tone sent a dark thrill through her. Good.

He was already starting to feel it, the need to own her even as the world ended.

She opened her mouth to explain, but another shadow lunged from the darkness under the bleachers.

A former cheerleader—now something else, claws extended, mouth unhinging.

Alex moved on pure instinct.

He spun, using the same footwork that made him unstoppable on the field, and drove his helmet straight into the creature’s face.

Bone cracked. Black ichor sprayed. The thing dropped, twitching.

He stared at his hands, breathing hard. “I… I just…”

Elara’s eyes widened.

A faint golden glow flickered around his fists for half a second..then vanished.

Essence awakening. Already.

She grabbed his wrist. “We have to move. Now.”
They ran.

Campus was descending into hell. Students poured from dorms in pajamas, only to be dragged down by things that used to be their friends.

A basketball player she recognized from Alex’s team was cornered near the gym, screaming as three zombies tore into him.

Alex’s jaw clenched. “Tank, Jamal—he was right behind me…”

She hated the pain in his voice. Hated that she was about to make it worse.

They barricaded themselves inside the equipment shed behind the football field.

Old pads, helmets, and one emergency flashlight.

Alex shoved a metal shelf against the door while Elara checked the tiny window.

Outside, the horde moved with terrifying intelligence some crawling on all fours, others standing upright, using tools.

One was already trying to pick the lock on a nearby car with a bloody credit card.

Alex turned to her, chest heaving. “Talk. Right now.”

Elara swallowed. The truth tasted like ash.

“My family… we’re the reason this is happening. An ancestor of mine sealed something ancient under this campus two hundred years ago.
A gateway. A curse. I came here to close it forever. But someone on the research team opened it instead.
And now…...”

She lifted her hand. Black wisps of shadow curled between her fingers like living smoke. “It’s in my blood too.”

Alex stared at the shadows, then at her face. No fear. Just hunger. The same dark hunger she felt every time he looked at her.

He stepped closer until their bodies were flush. “So you’re telling me the girl I’ve been losing my mind over for three weeks is part monster?”

She nodded, waiting for rejection.

Instead, his hand slid into her silver hair, tilting her head back

His voice dropped to a growl. “Then you’re my monster now.”

The kiss was brutal, teeth and tongue and three weeks of denied want.

Outside, the world burned. Inside, something far more dangerous ignited between them.

When they broke apart, gasping, the golden glow was back around Alex’s arms, stronger now.

And in the distance, the first portal ripped open in the sky above the stadium: a swirling vortex of violet and black, spitting out things with wings and too many teeth.

Elara whispered against his lips, “Welcome to the end of the world, Ace.”

Alex’s eyes burned with new power, new purpose, and something far darker.

“Then let’s make it ours.”
