The Story Behind Red Coral
Not all beauty is made overnight. The red coral used in historic African and European jewellery is Corallium rubrum, a slow-growing marine treasure. A single branch can take decades, sometimes over a century to grow before it becomes a bead.
In the Benin Kingdom, coral beads were more than adornment. They were symbols of power, prestige, and legacy, carefully controlled and worn only by royalty and elites. Each bead was a piece of history, a marker of influence, and a portable treasure.
Today, natural red coral is rare and protected, making antique strands even more coveted. Modern pieces often use recycled or preserved coral, honoring the ocean while keeping the tradition alive.
