Periodontal Disease.
Periodontal disease is an infection and inflammation of the tissues that support and hold the teeth in place, including the gums and the bone around the teeth.

Main causes
•Poor oral hygiene and buildup of plaque
•Plaque that hardens into tartar/calculus
•Smoking or to***co use
•Some medical conditions, such as diabetes
•Certain medications and genetic factors

Common signs and symptoms
•Red, swollen, or tender gums
•Bleeding gums, especially during brushing
•Persistent bad breath
•Gums pulling away from the teeth
•Loose or shifting teeth
•Pain or difficulty when chewing

Stages
√Gingivitis – early gum inflammation, usually with bleeding, but without permanent bone loss.
√Periodontitis – infection progresses deeper, causing damage to the tissues and bone supporting the teeth. Without treatment, teeth can eventually become loose.

Prevention
•Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste.
•Clean between the teeth every day using floss or interdental brushes.
