A key ingredient in most gel nail polishes, TPO (trimethylbenzoyl diphenylphosphine oxide), has now been banned in the EU (since September 2025) and Great Britain (as of August 2026). This is the photoinitiator that helps gel polish harden under UV/LED light.

Why the ban? Animal studies linked TPO exposure to fertility concerns, and regulators reclassified it as a substance that may cause cancer or reproductive harm, triggering an automatic ban under EU law.

Should you panic? Not necessarily. Experts note that absorption through the nail plate is unlikely, exposure during a manicure is minimal, and past safety reviews found TPO safe at the concentrations used professionally, the ban reflects Europe's cautious, "better safe than sorry" regulatory style rather than confirmed harm in humans.

The takeaway isn't "gel manicures are dangerous", it is that regulations differ by region, and it's worth knowing what's in the bottle. 💚
