CAN POOR ORAL HYGIENE LEAD TO CANCER.
What is Cancer? Cancer is the abnormal growth of cells in the body where it is not meant to be.
Yes, Poor oral health is associated with higher risks of cancer, especially digestive system cancer. Poor health is a major public health problem affecting over 3.5 billion people across the world. Common oral disease and condition include dental cavities,gingivitis and periodontal diseases.Dental Health Condition can affect not only the oral cavity but also a person's general quality of life and the ability to speak and eat. Poor oral hygiene, such as not brushing properly regularly is a leading Contributor to oral diseases. Cancer is a heterogeneous disease, Poor oral health can have different impact on different types of cancer. Oral Cancer in the mouth are generally broken down into three main areas; the lips, inside the mouth and the tongue. Oral Cancer can also be found in the throat, the area in the back part of the mouth called the Oropharynx.
Throat Cancer is medically called OROPHARYNGEAL CANCER. Throat cancer is generally found in the back of the tongue,back of the roof of the mouth, the tonsils and the area in the upper Throat. ORAL SQUAMOUS CELL CARCIONOMAS(OSCC) are among the Commonest cancer in African especial South East Asia.
SYMPTOMS OF ORAL CANCER
1) Sore that doesn't heal or a lump that doesn't go away.
2)Unexplained chronic mouth pain and pain in the teeth or jaw, losse teeth, white or red patches in the mouth or throat area.
3)problem with swallowing or chewing ,lump in the neck or chronic bad breath.
RISK FACTOR OF ORAL CANCER
To***co products such as Cigarette or chewing to***co,excessive alcohol usage.

When bacteria are allowed to grow and thrive in the mouth due to poor oral hygiene practice, they can infect the mouth and throat area causing changes in cell growth.Maintaining good oral health significantly reduces the risk for developing mouth or throat cancer.

IS CHEWING GUM BENEFICIAL OR DETRIMENTAL TO THE HEALTH
Yes, it is detrimental to the health. People have been chewing gum in various forms for thousands of years. Original GUM were made from the sap of trees.
However, most modern chewing gum are made from synthetic rubbers. Because they are synthetic they have some negative effects.
Effects of chewing gum.
1)Gastrointestinal problems; Chewing gum causes you to swallow excess air , which can cause abdominal pain and bloating.
2)Tooth Damage;when you chew sugary or sugar-free gum it can cause tooth damage because sugar-free gum often contain acidic flavouring that can lead to dental erosion, which can over time dissolve the teeth.
3)It Can Trigger TMJ(TEMPORMANDIBULAR JOINT DISORDER);When you chew gum on one side more than the other side it causes jaw muscle imbalance and also cause a painful and chronic condition know as TMJ.
4)Headache; When chewing ,8 facial muscles are involved. Unnecessary chewing can create chronic tightness in two of these muscles,located close to the temple which can lead to chronic, intermittent headaches.
5)Mask bad breath; Chewing gum does not take away bad breath ,rather it masks bad breath.Bad breath is symptom of digestive problems or excessive tooth decay. So if you don't treat bad breath ,it won't go away.
6)Diarrhea; The sugar alcohol used to sweeten sugar-free gum a laxative effects when used in a large amount.
In other words, Chewing lots of sugar-free gum could cause digestive distress and diarrhea. All sugar alcohol can cause digestive problems for people with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
CONCLUSIONS
Just keep in mind that chewing gum is and of itself is not necessarily a healthy habit develop and it is one that may come with some pitfalls and risk that are worth considering. If you want to keep your mouth refreshing, it is better to brush and floss your teeth or use mouth wash rather than to use chewing gum to clean them. CAN DIABETES EFFECT OUR ORAL HEALTH.
YES, HIGH BLOOD SUGAR can weaken white blood cells .These are your body's main way to fight infection that can occur inthe mouth.
If the sugar level is high in your blood ,it's high in your saliva too. Bacteria in plaque a sticky film use sugar as food. Some of this bacteria can cause tooth decay,cavities and gum .if the tooth is not treated it can also lead to tooth loss. Gum disease can be more severe and take longer to heal if you have diabetes.
HOW DIABETES CAN TAKE ITS TOLL ON YOUR ORAL HEALTH.
* You may have less saliva, causing your mouth to feel dry(Dry mouth is also caused by certain medicine)
* Your gums may become inflamed and bleed often (sign of gum disease)
* Infection in your mouth can take longer to heal.

Regular dental visits are important to prevent problems. Follow your diabetes care schedule. Keep regular check ups .
Ask your dentist how often you should have your teeth checked .

How to Maintain Good Oral Health?

Drink fluoridated water and brush with fluoride toothpaste.

Practice good oral hygiene. Brush teeth thoroughly twice a day and floss daily between the teeth to remove dental plaque.

Visit your dentist at least once a year, even if you have no natural teeth or have dentures.

Do not use any to***co products. If you smoke, quit.

Limit alcoholic drinks.

If you have diabetes, work to maintain control of the disease. This will decrease risk for other complications, including gum disease. Treating gum disease may help lower your blood sugar level.

If your medication causes dry mouth, ask your doctor for a different medication that may not cause this condition. If dry mouth cannot be avoided, drink plenty of water, chew sugarless gum but do not chew for a long period of time , and avoid to***co products and alcohol.

See your doctor or a dentist if you have sudden changes in taste and smell.
Remember poor oral hygiene reduce one's self esteem.
