The Roman Catholic Diocese of Buffalo has responded to public backlash following the sale of St. Ann’s Church, a historic Gothic cathedral, to a Muslim community. Built in 1886 and closed in 2007 due to a lack of parishioners amid changing demographics, the church was sold in November 2022 to Buffalo Crescent Holdings for a mere $250,000. The company plans to turn the church into a mosque. A social media post highlighting the sale went viral, causing a flurry of furious replies, becoming a symbol of Christianity’s decline in the area, and in general.

The Diocese intervened and clarified that financial difficulties were to blame for the sale, and that the church needed an estimated $30 million in repairs. ‘The work that was needed was incredibly expensive and beyond the scope of the diocese,’ a spokesman said. ‘We’ve had other properties that we’ve sold within the diocese that have been sold to other religious groups that have used them for their faith services, so as a general rule, the diocese does not have a problem with that,’ he added. The Diocese’s financial difficulties reached a head in 2020, when it was forced to declare bankruptcy after nearly a thousand allegations of sexual abuse were recorded against its employees.
