CAN MALARIA BE PREVENTED?
Malaria can often be prevented by the use of antimalarial drugs and use of protection measures against mosquito bites.
MEDICATIONS
When planning to travel to an area where malaria occurs, talk with your doctor well in advance of your departure. Drugs to prevent malaria can be prescribed for travelers to malarious areas, but travelers from different countries may receive different recommendations, reflecting differences in treatment protocols as well as availability of medicines in different countries. Travelers visiting only cities or rural areas where there is no risk of malaria may not require preventive drugs, but an exact itinerary is necessary to determine what degree of protection may be needed.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there are several medications recommended for prevention of malaria in travelers. Determining which medication is best depends on several factors, such as your medical history and the amount of time before your scheduled departure. Strict adherence to the recommended doses and schedules of the antimalarial drug selected is necessary for effective protection.
PROTECTION FROM MOSQUITOES
Be aware that you are still at risk for malaria even with the use of protection.
To avoid mosquito bites, the CDC recommends the following:
- Apply insect repellent to exposed skin. The recommended repellent contains 20-35% percent N,N-Diethyl-meta-toluamide (DEET).
- Wear long-sleeved clothing and long pants if you are outdoors at night.
- Use a mosquito net over the bed if your bedroom is not air-conditioned or screened. For additional protection, treat the mosquito net with the insecticide permethrin.
- Spray an insecticide or repellent on clothing, as mosquitoes may bite through thin clothing.
- Spray pyrethrin or a similar insecticide in your bedroom before going to bed.

HOW CAN A PERSON CONTACT MALARIA?
Malaria is a serious disease that spreads when youโre bitten by a mosquito infected by tiny parasites. When it bites, the mosquito injects malaria parasites into your bloodstream. Malaria is caused by the parasites, not by a virus or by a type of bacterium.
If it isnโt treated, malaria can cause severe health problems such as seizures, brain damage, trouble breathing, organ failure and death.
When the mosquito bites a malaria patient, the mosquito becomes infected and will pass on the disease when it bites another person. Malaria is not transmitted from person to person. In addition, malaria can be transmitted through contaminated blood or blood product transfusion, organ transplant, or shared needles or syringes.
Malaria may also be transmitted from a mother to her foetus/newborn baby before or during delivery.

Malaria is a major public health concern in Nigeria, with an estimated 68 million cases and 194 000 deaths due to the disease in 2021. Nigeria has the highest burden of malaria globally, accounting for nearly 27% of the global malaria burden. The risk of transmission exists throughout the country, all year round. In 2022, Nigeria top the Malaria death rates in Africa with 31.3% which is so absurd.
Malaria is a serious and sometimes fatal disease caused by a group of malaria parasites, namely Plasmodium falciparum, Plasmodium malariae, Plasmodium ovale, Plasmodium vivax and Plasmodium knowlesi.
Do you know Malaria is one of mostly common in Nigeria because we take it as norms and we neglect it alot. But most of us don't know that, this so call Malaria is killing.
Nevertheless, the truth is that we can stay safe from Malaria if we prevent ourselves and make our country a Malaria free nation.
Stay tune...
