An ILO-SIYB Trainer is a person prepared to conduct SIYB training for potential and existing entrepreneurs.

The SIYB structure has three levels:

- Licensed Master Trainers develop the capacity of Trainers.
- Trainers deliver the SIYB packages to entrepreneurs.
- Entrepreneurs apply the learning in their businesses.

A Trainer may conduct Generate Your Business Idea, Start Your Business, Improve Your Business or Expand Your Business training, using the SIYB manuals and active, problem-centred learning methods.

In simple terms, a Trainer does not only give lectures. The Trainer facilitates practical activities, using the ILO- SIYB TRAINING METHODOLOGY that help entrepreneurs solve real business problems and improve their businesses.

WHY I BECAME PASSIONATE ABOUT TRAINING

I got connected to the training profession by what seemed like chance, but looking back now, I realise that it was divinely orchestrated.

In 1983, after completing my National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme, I was employed by the Lagos State Government and posted directly to the Staff Development Centre, Old Secretariat, Ikeja, under the Ministry of Establishment and Civil Service Matters.

I was a young graduate at the time. My original plan was to work in a corporate organisation, but I was encouraged to give Government Service a trial.

I did—and I stayed for 35 years!

I was employed as an English Lecturer, and on resumption, I began lecturing Confidential Secretaries II who had been sent to the Centre for further training.

I genuinely enjoyed my work. I found it fulfilling and impactful because I could see the difference training was making in the lives and work of the participants. I always looked forward to going to my classes.

Gradually, I developed a deep passion for training.

As a member of the Management Studies Department, I was also involved in coordinating short-duration programmes, where I facilitated sessions on Communication, Management and other related topics.

My career progressed over the years, and I rose from Grade Level 8 to Grade Level 17, eventually retiring from the Lagos State Public Service as a Director (Training) and Head of the Directorate of Programmes.

During those years, I coordinated numerous training programmes and facilitated a wide range of learning interventions.

I served as the main coordinator of Women Empowerment Programmes for women in middle-level management in the Public Service and also coordinated the Public Service Induction Programme for newly employed public servants for several years.

As a coordinator of training programmes, I was also required to facilitate sessions. The more I trained, the more confident and competent I became.

MY FIRST TRAINING OF TRAINERS WORKSHOP

In 1996, I attended my first Training of Trainers (TOT) Workshop.

It was a four-week residential programme held at Gateway Hotel, Ijebu-Ode, organised by the Administrative Staff College of Nigeria (ASCON) in collaboration with the Lagos State Public Service Staff Development Centre.

That was my first professional exposure to being trained specifically to become a trainer.

In 2003, I attended another Training of Trainers programme—an Advanced Training of Trainers Workshop organised by the Centre for Management Development (CMD), Shangisha.

Then, in 2006, my journey into entrepreneurship training took a significant turn.

MY JOURNEY WITH THE ILO

I became connected with the International Labour Organization (ILO) through the Nigeria Employers' Consultative Association (NECA).

As a member of the NECA's Network of Entrepreneurial Women (NNEW), some of us were trained to support women entrepreneurs in building stronger and more sustainable businesses.

We were trained as ILO-SIYB Trainers, using the ILO's Start and Improve Your Business (SIYB) methodology.

After successfully completing the Training of Trainers programme, we began training female entrepreneurs.

There were also other Training of Trainers programmes that I attended between 2008 and 2010, further strengthening my skills and deepening my passion for the profession.

LOOKING BACK, I CAN SEE GOD'S HAND

When I look back today, I realise that God was taking me, step by step, deeper into the world of training.

What appeared to be an ordinary posting in 1983 became the beginning of a remarkable professional journey.

Over the years, I have had the privilege of training thousands of people in public and private organisations.

I have trained Public Servants, Health Professionals, Lawyers, Office Attendants, Administrative Officers, Nurses, Teachers, Secretarial Assistants and many others.

But what made me love training even more were the testimonies.

I received feedback from trainees telling me how the training had improved their performance at work, transformed their approach to their responsibilities, and in some cases, even positively affected their home lives.

Those testimonies reminded me that training is not simply about standing in front of a classroom and teaching. It is about transforming lives.

FROM TRAINER TO MASTER TRAINER

Today, my passion has taken me even further.

As a Licensed ILO-SIYB Master Trainer, I train potential and existing entrepreneurs, while also training Trainers who will, in turn, train entrepreneurs.

This creates a powerful multiplier effect.

When we train one competent Trainer, that Trainer can go on to train many entrepreneurs. Those entrepreneurs can build better businesses, generate greater income, create employment and contribute to the economic development of our nation.

I am also privileged to serve as a Lead Trainer on the Women in Digital Business Programme, organised by the ILO, ITC and Microsoft Philanthropies, where we train women entrepreneurs on how to digitalise their businesses and take advantage of digital opportunities.

MY LESSON FROM THIS JOURNEY

My experience over the years has taught me something very important:

When you diligently do what you have been given to do, and you become passionate about it, God can take you further and higher than you ever imagined.

I did not set out in 1983 intending to become the trainer I am today.

But God had a plan.

What began as an employment opportunity became a career.

What became a career became a passion.

And what became a passion became a calling to impact lives.

Today, I remain passionate about training, teaching, mentoring and empowering people.

My desire is to continue transferring knowledge, developing Trainers and contributing, in my own little way, to the development of successful entrepreneurs, productive workplaces and a better society.

Find what you do well. Do it diligently. Become passionate about it. Keep learning. Keep improving. Keep impacting lives.

You never know where God may take you.
