BPH SIGNS & MANAGEMENT
π£ What is BPH?
β BPH means benign prostatic hyperplasia, also called enlarged prostate.
β It is a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland that can press on the urine tube and affect urination.
β It becomes more common with increasing age, especially after 50 years.
π£ Common signs
β Frequent urination, especially at night.
β Sudden urge to pass urine.
β Weak or slow urine stream.
β Difficulty starting urination.
β Straining while passing urine.
β Dribbling after urination.
β Feeling that the bladder is not fully empty.
β In severe cases, urine may stop completely, called urinary retention.
π£ Important note
β BPH is not prostate cancer, but both can cause urinary symptoms.
β Do not assume urinary symptoms are only due to age; urine infection, stones, diabetes, prostate cancer, or bladder problems may also cause similar symptoms.
π£ Diagnosis
β Doctor may ask about urinary symptoms, medicines, fluid intake, and nighttime urination.
β Tests may include urine test, PSA blood test, kidney function test, ultrasound, urine flow test, and digital re**al examination.
β PSA can increase in BPH, infection, inflammation, or prostate cancer, so results must be interpreted by a doctor.
π£ Management
β Mild symptoms may be managed with watchful waiting and lifestyle changes.
β Reduce evening fluids if night urination is troublesome.
β Cut out caffeine, alcohol, and very spicy drinks if they worsen urgency.
β Pass urine before sleep and avoid holding urine for long periods.
β Medicines Are prescribed depending on symptoms and prostate size.
β Severe symptoms, repeated urine retention, kidney problems, bladder stones, or recurrent infections may need procedures or surgery such as TURP or minimally invasive treatments.
π£ See a doctor if
β Urinary symptoms are frequent, worsening, disturbing sleep, or affecting daily life.
β There is blood in urine, burning urination, recurrent urine infection, or unexplained weight loss.
