Surfactants are not the same as true soaps.
True soaps are naturally alkaline in nature, and they must remain in this alkaline pH to foam properly and do the job of cleansing. Examples of true soaps include bar soaps, black soaps, and castile soaps.

However, our skin and hair are most comfortable at a pH between 4.5 -5.5. Disrupting this pH regularly is not suitable for many people, especially those with acne-prone, sensitive, or sensitized skin.

While normal skin may tolerate true soaps, acne-prone and sensitive skin often do better with surfactant-based cleansers that are formulated at a skin-friendly pH.

Another part of the body that does not enjoy true soap is our hair. Cleansing the hair and scalp with a balanced pH cleanser helps avoid excessive dryness, cuticle damage, and pH fluctuations, allowing the hair to thrive better.

This is why gentle, pH-balanced face washes and shampoos are often a better choice for healthy skin and hair.
