An episiotomy is a surgical incision made in the perineum, the tissue between the va**na and a**s, to enlarge the va**nal opening during childbirth. It's usually performed during the second stage of labor.

Purpose
To make the va**nal opening larger for childbirth

Procedure
An obstetrician or a midwife makes an incision in the perineum with anesthesia and episiotomy scissors

Types
Midline (vertical) or mediolateral (at an angle)

Advantages
Midline incisions are easier to repair, but mediolateral incisions are less likely to extend into the a**l area

Complications
Unwanted extension of the incision, va**nal prolapse, infection, sexual dysfunction.Etc
