Prep" most commonly refers to pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), a highly effective HIV prevention method for people who are HIV-negative but at risk. It involves taking an antiviral medication either daily or through long-acting injections to reduce the risk of getting HIV from s*x or injection drug use. While it can reduce the risk of HIV by about 99% from s*x when taken as prescribed, PrEP does not protect against other s*xually transmitted infections (STIs), so condoms should still be used when possible.
How it works
PrEP is a medication that works by stopping the HIV virus from taking hold and spreading in the body if you are exposed.
It is for people who do not have HIV but are at risk of getting it.
If you are considering taking PrEP, you must be tested for HIV and other STIs first, as it is only for people who are HIV-negative.
PrEP is much less effective when not taken consistently.
Who should consider PrEP
Individuals who have a s*xual partner with HIV.
People who have not consistently used condoms.
Those who have been diagnosed with an STI in the past six months.
People who inject drugs and share needles or other equipment, or have an injection partner with HIV.
What you need to do
See a doctor: Talk to a healthcare provider or visit a s*xual health clinic to discuss if PrEP is right for you.
Get tested: You will need to be tested for HIV and other STIs before starting.
Start the medication: A doctor will provide a prescription for the medication, which can be taken as a daily pill or as an injection.
Regular follow-ups: You will need regular follow-up appointments for ongoing HIV and STI testing to continue getting your prescription.
Important considerations
Side effects: Some people may experience side effects like nausea, diarrhea, headache, or fatigue, which often go away within a few weeks.
Kidney function: PrEP can affect kidney function, so it is important to have your kidneys monitored regularly by your doctor.
Other STIs: PrEP does not protect
