WHAT IS A " NORMAL" PERIOD? 5 SIGNS YOUR FLOW IS TOTALLY HEALTHY ACCORDING TO DOCTORS
If you’ve ever sat down with your friends to complain about your period, you already know that everyone has a completely different experience. Some people have their period for a week, while others are finished with the whole matter in under 72 hours. There are light flows, heavy flows, and flows that relegate you to bed for the duration of your menstrual cycle. So with all this variation, what is a normal period, if any such thing exists?
It’s a good question, but unfortunately, like so many other things about our menstrual cycles and reproductive systems, a pretty complicated one. While it might seem like common sense at this point, Dr. Mark Trolice of the IVF Center in Orlando, Florida explains to HelloGiggles that our periods happen on a monthly basis when our hormones, estrogen and progesterone, decline due to a lack of pregnancy and our uterus sheds its lining. This happens every 24 to 34 days, give or take a day or two, according to Dr. Trolice.
So really, if your bestie is shocked at what you describe as your normal period, tell her not to worry. Everyone’s period is different and most of them are normal.
But just in case you need convincing, here are some signs that your period is normal and there’s nothing to worry about:
1. It shows up every month.
As long as your period is coming every month, even if it’s a little late because you’re not getting enough sleep or are super stressed out, that’s a normal period. Dr. Antoinette Nguyen, an obstetrician/gynecologist and family planning specialist in Chapel Hill, North Carolina and fellow with Physicians for Reproductive Health, tells HG that menstrual cycles happen every 28 to 35 days, so even the professionals aren’t in total agreement about the timing of our menstrual cycles.
However, Dr. Alan Copperman, medical director at Progyny and ob/gyn at Mount Sinai Hospitals in New York City, tells HG that while on birth control, it’s possible to skip periods, but if they stop coming completely, you should talk to your doctor.
This is exactly why you shouldn’t lose your mind if your period is a day or two early or late.
But if your period doesn’t come at all for a month or two, you should definitely check with your doctor and make sure they know you’re worried about it. You’re the expert on your own body and periods, after all.
2. And it’s basically always been that way.
Your period will even out after a while when you’re younger, and then it will tend to follow the same pattern for the rest of your reproductive life (unless you start some form of birth control that changes your natural cycle, such as if you get a copper IUD and notice your periods become longer). It might not be the same every month, but you’ll start to notice that you go through one or two light or short months, and then a heavier or longer one.
Dr. Nguyen tells HG, “Variations in menstrual flow and cycle length are common at the extremes of reproductive age.” She adds:
Another sign that you might not have a normal period is if your flow changes in color, according to Dr. Copperman. “If the period discharge suddenly looks darker or smells bad, speak to your doctor as soon as possible to rule out the presence of an infection.”
3. You’re losing the right amount of blood.
During a normal period, a woman will lose anywhere from 20 to 60 ml of blood, or even 70 to 80 ml at the high end. However, Dr. Nguyen tells us, “This is not easy for a woman to measure on her own.” Because really, who has time for that?
But if you use a menstrual cup and are into tracking it, you can measure it more easily. A DivaCup, for example, holds about one ounce of menstrual blood, or 30 ml, so you can make an estimate every time you take it out for a rinse.
4. Heavy periods are normal, too.
Dr. Bat-Sheva Lerner Maslow of Extend Fertility in New York City tells HG, “Clots are very normal, and many women will experience them at least once in their lifetime. Using the right menstrual hygiene product can play a significant role in alle
viating this problem.” She adds, “Furthermore, it’s perfectly normal if your flow is heavier or lighter from month to month.”
But if you show signs of “anemia, such as lightheadedness, dizziness, or shortness of breath,” it could mean that you’re losing too much blood with each period. So just keep checking in with your body.
5. It’s not messing with your life.
Dr. Trolice tells HG that “menorrhagia, or excessive menstrual flow, is mostly subjective.” He adds that a “woman usually complains of a change in her flow consisting of clots [or] a duration more than seven days.” Dr. Nguyen reminds us, though, that “clots can be normal for some women,” but if you’ve never had them and then start to, you should talk to your doctor about it.
Also, figuring out what’s “too heavy” is not a perfect science.
undefined
Remember, when it comes to your period, you always know best. So don’t be afraid to question any changes and bring them up with your doctor. If things aren’t “normal” with your flow, you’re the one who’ll know first.

THE ROLE OF BODY pH IN S*X DETERMINATION
Wondering how to pick the s*x of your child? Have you ever heard about the importance of raising/lowering the pH of your body? Most importantly, how do you go about it?
Gender selection , the pH consideration?
To start, the father determines the s*x of the child. Males provide s***m – some 40 million to 1.2 billion per ej*******on! Each s***m produced by the father carries an “X” or “Y” chromosome. If “X” s***m makes it to the egg, the baby will be female. Vice versa, a “Y” s***m results in a male. Contrary to a few myths out there, fathers have no way to segregate the “X” s***m from the “Y” s***m in the testicles. They are produced in near equal amounts per ej*******on. Mothers, meanwhile, can only provide an X chromosome – as such, they have no influence over gender.
pH has long been suspected to influence the conception of a boy or a girl — it plays a crucial role in gender swaying, because it's believed that an acidic pH favors X-s***m, and alkalinic pH favors Y-s***m.The argument of body pH is founded on one underlying theory: an alkaline pH in the female body favors “boy” s***m (s***m carrying the Y chromosome) while an acidic pH in the female body favors “girl” s***m (s***m carrying the X chromosome). Based on a female’s composition, higher acidity kills off the weaker boy s***m, allowing girl s***m to reach the egg, while higher alkalinity gives boys a greater chance of survival and thus greater chance to fertilize the female egg.
To try to conceive a boy or a girl, you'll raise or lower the pH of the two fluids involved in conception: cervical mucus (CM), the fluid in the va**na, and semen, the fluid that carries s***m.
CM (Cervical Mucus) and Semen pH
Normal CM pH varies throughout the cycle, from very acidic to very alkalinic. During the non-fertile part of your cycle, the pH of the va**na is very acidic, from 3.8 to 4.5. Since pregnancy isn't possible at this time, this hostile acidic environment protects you from bacteria and other organisms. However, approaching ovulation, the pH of CM shifts dramatically, becoming very alkalinic and s***m-friendly. The varying level of pH during your cycle is very important: if CM stays too acidic, it can be a cause of infertility; if it stays too alkaline, you may be prone to yeast infections.
Normal semen pH is 7.1 to 8.0, neutral to somewhat alkalinic. pH of semen is checked as part of any semen analysis; generally, when pH is outside this range it indicates a problem: if pH is too high or low, s***m may not survive, or be unable to move or pe*****te the egg. Abnormal pH values can be a symptom of blockage in the seminal vesicles, or an infection.
Cervical Mucus (CM) pH
If you are trying to conceive a girl, target a pH of 4.0 - 4.5 (Acidic). And when trying to conceive a boy target a pH that is between 7.5 - 9.0 (Very Alkalinic).
Semen pH
If you are trying to conceive a girl, target a pH of 7.0 - 7.5
(Neutral-ish). And when trying to conceive a boy target a pH that is between 9+(Very Alkalinic)
How can you make your body more alkaline (if you are trying to have a boy) ? Eating a diet high in potassium and sodium helps alkalinity, which is desired if you are trying to conceive a boy. How can you make your body more acidic? (if you want a baby girl). Eating a diet high in calcium, magnesium, and highly acidic foods lends itself to having girls.( For more information on this read up my earlier article on body pH.
Swissgarde also provides you with herbal suppliments that can help you achieve , your desired body pH, before conception. For more information on them, Contact me on 08097902806.
This is just one among seven important considerations for child selection. Watch out for details of the others in the future.
ELIMINATING TOXINS AND TOXICANTS IN YOUR BODY
Humans in existence today, appear to be engulfed by Toxins and Toxicants. What are they? How do we free ourselves from their harmful effects?
Toxins are biological entities — things like bug bites, food allergies, yeast, bacteria, fungus, even emotional and spiritual trauma. Though our own bodies don’t produce substances that are toxic to us, it’s important to remember that when our systems are out of balance, we may overproduce some substances.
When this happens, they essentially act as toxins in the body. Some examples are stress hormones and LDL cholesterol, which are completely necessary in specific amounts but become toxic when we have too much of them.
A toxicant is something artificial that can build up in the body and have negative impacts. These are things like the chemicals in manufactured makeup and skin care products, antibiotics, heavy metals, pesticides, air pollution, alcohol and drugs.
We’re exposed to a lot of toxicants every day, some of which are by choice and some of which are in our environments. Reducing toxicants where we can is really helpful (sometimes more so than a detox program). And for the environmental pollution that’s not in our control, detoxification is key.
In order for your body to function at its best, its important to rid it of accumulated toxins and toxicants. Your body will work much more efficiently when it’s clean inside. When your body is free from toxins and toxicants, it will be better able to heal itself too.
One of the best ways to detox your entire system is with the use of cleansing herbs. This isn’t just something you do once and then you’re done. It’s a program you can use throughout your life to help your body to dispel toxins daily and keep it running properly.
To make it easier to rid your body of these, it’s helpful to put less toxins and avoid the build up of toxicants into it in the first place. Try to cut down on alcohol, to***co and drugs as much as possible.
Whenever possible, eat organic foods and drink a lot of fresh water. Water helps flush the toxins from your body. Here are some herbs that are known to eliminate toxins from the body
DANDELION ROOT
The root of the dandelion contains substances that increase bile production. This in turn improves digestion and helps rid the body of toxins. Dandelion root is a great liver cleanser and contains many vitamins and minerals that are good for the body.
GREEN TEA
It’s not just trendy, it’s amazing for you! It’s full of antioxidants to help process toxins, especially heavy metals, and it acts as a natural diuretic. Replacing coffee with green tea in your day can give you a bit of the caffeine boost and offer better health benefits.
TURMERIC
A powerful antioxidant called curcumin is the active ingredient in this herb and is what gives it its ability to improve and maintain your health. Turmeric is a great natural liver detoxifier
D**G QUAI
The herb D**g Quai is popular for its use of cleaning the blood stream of toxins and stimulating circulation. This herb is most beneficial for the blood, as it is very iron rich and may prevent anemia. Some research has indicated that it may also be effective in reducing blood pressure and evening out blood sugar.
D**g Quai is sometimes used as a mild sedative, soothing the nerves and promoting relaxation. People suffering from insomnia often use it for this reason
KELP
Kelp is an edible marine algae which grows along various shore-lines.Kelp is the best source of iodine nutrients which are essential for the functioning of the thyroid. The thyroid gland absorbs iodine directly from the blood to produce the thyroxin hormones which help keep your body metabolism active. Kelp also helps cure various diseases caused by an under active thyroid, including fatigue, goiter and also low blood pressure. It also works as a toxin scavenger and help balance the body’s pH level while improving your immune system.
BLACK WALNUT
Three active agents in black walnut, juglone, tannins, and iodine, make it particularly effective in natural health and wellness practices. Juglone is the black walnut’s natural defense mechanism, which helps fight against harmful organisms like bacteria and fungus. Tannins also help deter harmful organisms. Iodine, an essential mineral to all life forms, helps reduce the lifespan of many harmful organisms.
GARLIC
Garlic protects your arteries, especially your aorta, coronary arteries, and cerebral arteries by letting blood flow uninterrupted to your organs. It’s also rich in sulfuric compounds (allicin). This is indispensable for getting rid of toxins in your blood and helping your intestines eliminates harmful microorganisms.
APPLE CIDER VINEGAR
The toxins in the body have to be released somehow in order for the detox to be effective. Your digestive system is the best way to pass these toxins, so it’s important to make sure that it is running smoothly.
Apple cider vinegar has been shown to help cleanse the digestive system, both due to its acidic nature, and the fact that it contains enzymes that encourage healthy bacteria. Your digestive system is long, and many times we tend to reduce it to just the stomach and colon. But remember there are several feet of large and small intestines, and apple cider vinegar can help with the entire tract.
DOING IT YOURSELF
The good news is that Swissgarde has made all these herbs available for you to win the war against toxins and toxicants, just get Super cider, Aloe Power, Buchu Power and Defender. With these suppliments of high repute that contain these herbs and much more, Victory is assured.

11 CANCER CAUSING FOODS YOU PROBABLY EAT EVERY DAY
While you may be thinking “Everything causes cancer, so why bother,” the 11 products listed here have been scientifically shown to increase the risk of developing cancer. The truth is, there’s no better treatment than prevention. You can take action today, allowing you to protect your future health. Positive health can be overwhelming, but as long as you remain active and follow a balanced, nutrient-rich diet, you will significantly reduce your risk.
1. Canned Tomatoes
While fresh tomatoes are actually considered to be very good for your health and help to prevent cancer, the canned ones are not. Actually, most canned foods can be a concern because of the material the can is made of. The lining of almost all canned foods are made with a chemical called bisphenol-A or BPA. Studies show that BPA affects the way genes work inside the brain. Our advise to you is, avoid cans and cook fresh or buy glass bottles.
2. Soda (Mineral Drinks)
Research shows that people who consume more than one soda per day have a higher risk of stroke than people who don’t drink sodas. These drinks are full of sugar and are an empty source of calories that cause weight gain and are one of the main reasons for developing obesity. Drinking large amounts of soda cause your blood sugar to spike which can result to both inflammation and insulin resistance. These beverages also contain a load of artificial colorings and food chemicals like derivative 4-methlylimidazole (4-MI). No wonder soda pop has been shown to be very bad for your health and cause cancer.
3. Potato Chips
Potato chips are great. They are cheap, great tasting and are the perfect quick snack. However, the negative effects they have on your body may not be worth it. The snack is high in both fat and calories, which will definitely result in weight gain. Additionally, potato chips are full of trans-fats which can cause high cholesterol and they have excessive sodium levels which for many people, cause high blood pressure.
Processed Meats
You might wonder what type of meats are considered to be processed. This is a very long list that includes, sausages, hot dogs, bacon and most lunch meats. Study shows that the excessive amounts of salt and chemicals that are used when making processed meats are extremely damaging to your health and can increase the risk of early death. All these processed meats contain large amounts of chemicals and preservatives, including sodium, which make them, look appealing and fresh even when they are not. We advise you to only eat fresh meats instead of the processed ones.
Alcohol
Alcohol use is the second leading cause of cancer, right behind to***co. While a moderate or low consumption of alcohol can be healthy and lead to a reduced risk of heart disease, excessive drinking is known to cause heart failure, stroke, and sudden death. In 2007, the World Health Organization International Agency for Research on Cancer studied the scientific evidence regarding cancer and alcohol use from 27 different studies. They found sufficient evidence to state that excessive alcohol use is the main cause of mouth, esophagus, liver, colon, mouth, re**um, and female breast cancers.
Diet Anything
Diet foods, including frozen foods, or prepackaged foods that are labeled as “diet” or “low fat”, including sodas, contain aspartame. This is a chemical, artificial sweetener that we have mentioned before in this list. Many studies show that aspartame causes many diseases and sicknesses such as cancer and heart problems.
Highly processed white flours
You are probably already aware of the fact that white flour is not a good thing, but you most like don’t really know how bad it actually is for your health. Nowadays, mills don’t longer wait for their flour to whiten with time. but they bleach flour with a chemical called chlorine gas. Chlorine gas is a dangerous irritant that is not supposed to be inhaled and in large amounts can even be lethal.
Foods that are highly salted, pickled, or smoked
These products typically contain preservatives, such as nitrates which are intend to make them look appealing for as long as possible. The additives used in processed food can pile up in your body over time and eventually damage the cellular levels and lead to cancer. Smoked fods are even worse fo you, when they are cooked in high temperatures, the nitrates are converted to the much more dangerous kind of nitrites.
Hydrogenated Oils
Let’s start by saying that all hydrogenated oils are vegetable oils. Vegetable oils cannot be extracted naturally but have to be chemically removed from their source. To make them look appealing manufacturers frequently add color and scent. All vegetable oils contain high levels of Omega-6 fatty acids. An excess of these acids can cause various health problems, such as heart disease and skin cancer.
Refined Sugars
Refined sugars do not only highly increase your insulin levels but they are also the most prefereable food for cancer cells, therefore promoting their growth. Tumors and cancers both use sugars to “feed” and to increase in size. In order to grown and reproduce, cancer cells seem to prefer feeding on frustoce-rich sweeteners like high-fructose corn syrup. Foods like cakes, pies, cookies, sodas, juices, cereals, and many other popular items are loaded with refined sugars so it shoudn’t come as a surprise that you should stay away from them.
Microwave Popcorn
I really hate to be the one to tell you this, but even if microwave popcorn is extremly convenient, it can be very dangerous to your health. It is not even only about the popcorn itself but the microwave bags are lined with a chemical called perfluorooctanoic acid , a chemical that is linked to infertility in women. Numerous studies show that exposure to PFOA increases the risk of kidney bladder, liver, pancreas and testicular cancer.
God Ultimately keeps us healthy, but lets do our own part in this project called life.

TACKLING A CHALLENGE CALLED INDIGESTION
Indigestion can be pain or discomfort in your upper abdomen (dyspepsia) or burning pain behind the breastbone (heartburn).
Dyspepsia and heartburn may occur together or on their own. Symptoms usually appear soon after eating or drinking.
Common associated symptoms include:
• feeling full or bloated
• feeling sick (nausea)
• belching
• bringing up (regurgitating) fluid or food into the gullet (oesophagus)
Indigestion is a common problem that affects many people, but in most cases it's mild and only occurs occasionally.
What Causes Indigestion?
Indigestion is a symptom of many different conditions. It is usually related to a functional problem of the gastrointestinal tract (difficulty processing food or stomach acids). This dysfunction of the gastrointestinal system is caused most often by diseases, medications, and lifestyle.
DISEASES
Disease or conditions that may cause indigestion include:
• Ulcers (gastric or duodenal ulcer)
• GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease)
• Esophagitis
• Hiatal hernia
• Gallstones
• Pregnancy (especially late term)
• Inflammation of the pancreas (acute or chronic pancreatitis)
• Inflammation of the stomach (acute or chronic gastritis)
• Stomach infections and food poisoning
• Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
• Gastroparesis (a condition where the stomach doesn't empty properly; this often occurs in people with diabetes)
• Food allergies or sensitivities (such as lactose intolerance)
• Heart disease, angina, heart attack
• Thyroid disease
• Depression
MEDICATIONS
Medications that may cause indigestion include:
• Aspirin and many other painkillers such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
• Steroids (such as prednisone, methylprednisolone [Medrol, Medrol Dosepak], and Decadron)
• Estrogen and oral contraceptives
• Antibiotics (such as erythromycin and tetracycline)
• Thyroid medication
• Blood pressure medication
• Cholesterol medications (statins)
• Pain medications (codeine and other narcotics)
LIFESTYLE
What Lifestyle Factors Cause Indigestion?
Lifestyle factors that may cause indigestion include:
• Eating too much, eating too fast
• Eating fatty, greasy or spicy foods
• Excessive alcohol intake
• Smoking
• Stress, fatigue and anxiety
• Caffeine
• Moderate to intense exercise immediately after eating
NATURAL SOLUTION TO INDIGESTION USING PLANT AND HERBS
Aloe Vera
Just as Aloe Vera acts as a coolant and reduces the inflammation on the skin, it also cools down the stomach and provides heartburn relief. Aloe vera juice has a long history of use in Europe as a natural home remedy to relieve heartburn. You should only use aloe vera juice that has been specifically prepared for internal use, like Swissgarde’s Aloe Power.
Apples
Even a slice of apple can calm down acid production and reduce the burning sensation. Apples neutralize the acid in your stomach in about 5 minutes. Braeburn or Gala apples work best.
Apple Cider Vinegar
Stir 2 Tablespoons of apple cider vinegar into 1/2 cup of water or apple juice & drink immediately after each meal. It will calm stomach troubles and brings about digestive relief. Apple cider vinegar can also be taken in tablet or capsule form.
Garlic
Even though many people BLAME garlic for their heartburn, a clove or two can erase the burn as quickly as it came. Chew a clove of garlic when heartburn occurs, or store a few cloves of garlic in apple cider vinegar, and drink a sip of the liquid when heartburn occurs.
Raw garlic is a power-packed antibiotic, and is known to kill the pathogenic microorganism that is most often found in those suffering from gastritis.
Ginger
Fresh ginger is one of the oldest remedies for heartburn. It is also used to help treat nausea. Ginger can be added to food when it’s cooked, eaten raw, or consumed as ginger tea. Combine 1 tbsp. of ginger and lemon juice with 2 tbsp. of honey in 8 oz. of warm water. Drink when you begin to feel the effects of indigestion.
Peppermint Oil
Add two drops of peppermint oil to 8 oz. of cold water and drink whenever you have indigestion. If you are unable to drink this mixture, suck on one piece of peppermint candy to relieve indigestion and stomach irritation. Peppermint oil is a regular ingredient in over-the-counter heartburn medicines and a great cure for heartburn.
Turmeric
Turmeric helps stimulate digestion and prevent acid build-up, and is commonly found in curried foods. If you don’t want to use turmeric in your cooking, it is available in Swissgarde’s Buchu Power.
All of the Natural extracts mentioned above can be found in the following Swissgarde products that can be helped to take care of Indigestion. They include : Marina Spa, Buchu Power, Aloe Power, Super Cider and Defender. For information on how to get, select and combine them, contact me on 08097902806.
ABNORMAL UTERINE BLEEDING
What is abnormal uterine bleeding?
Abnormal uterine bleeding is any heavy or unusual bleeding from the uterus (through your va**na). It can occur at any time during your monthly cycle, including during your normal menstrual period.
Symptoms of abnormal uterine bleeding
Vaginal bleeding between periods is one symptom of abnormal uterine bleeding. Having extremely heavy bleeding during your period can also be considered abnormal uterine bleeding. Very heavy bleeding during a period and/or bleeding that lasts more than 7 days is called menorrhagia. For example, women may bleed enough to soak through 1 or more tampons or sanitary pads every hour.
What causes abnormal uterine bleeding?
A variety of things can cause abnormal uterine bleeding. Pregnancy is a common cause. Polyps or fibroids (small and large growths) in the uterus can also cause bleeding. Rarely, a thyroid problem, infection of the cervix, or cancer of the uterus can cause abnormal uterine bleeding.
In most women, abnormal uterine bleeding is caused by a hormone imbalance. When hormones are the problem, doctors call the problem dysfunctional uterine bleeding, or DUB. Abnormal bleeding caused by hormone imbalance is more common in teenagers or in women who are approaching menopause.
These are just a few of the problems that can cause abnormal uterine bleeding. These problems can occur at any age, but the likely cause of abnormal uterine bleeding usually depends on your age.
Women in their teens, 20s, and 30s
A common cause of abnormal bleeding in young women and teenagers is pregnancy. Many women have abnormal bleeding in the first few months of a normal pregnancy. Some birth control pills or the intrauterine device (IUD) can also cause abnormal bleeding.
Some young women who have abnormal uterine bleeding do not release an egg from their ovaries (called ovulation) during their menstrual cycle. This is common for teenagers who have just started getting their periods. This causes a hormone imbalance where the estrogen in your body makes the lining of your uterus (called the endometrium) grow until it gets too thick. When your body gets rid of this lining during your period, the bleeding will be very heavy. A hormone imbalance may also cause your body not to know when to shed the lining. This can cause irregular bleeding (“spotting”) between your periods.
Thickening of the lining of the uterus is another cause of bleeding in women in their 40s and 50s. This thickening can be a warning of uterine cancer. If you have abnormal uterine bleeding and you’re in this age group, you need to tell your doctor about it. It may be a normal part of getting older, but it’s important to make sure uterine cancer isn’t the cause.
Women after menopause
Hormone replacement therapy is a common cause of uterine bleeding after menopause. Other causes include endometrial and uterine cancer. These cancers are more common in older women than in younger women. But cancer is not always the cause of abnormal uterine bleeding. Many other problems can cause bleeding after menopause. For this reason, it’s important to talk to your doctor if you have any bleeding after menopause.
How is abnormal uterine bleeding diagnosed?
The tests your doctor orders may depend on your age. If you could be pregnant, your doctor may order a pregnancy test. If your bleeding is heavy, in addition to other tests, your doctor may want to check your blood count to make sure you don’t have a low blood count from the blood loss. This could lead to iron deficiency and anemia.
An ultrasound exam of your pelvic area shows both the uterus and the ovaries. It may also show the cause of your bleeding.
Your doctor may want to do an endometrial biopsy. This is a test of the uterine lining. It’s done by putting a thin plastic tube (called a catheter) into your uterus.
Another test is a hysteroscopy. A thin tube with a tiny camera in it is put into your uterus. The camera lets your doctor see the inside of your uterus. If anything abnormal shows up, your doctor can get a biopsy.
Can abnormal uterine bleeding be prevented or avoided?
If your abnormal uterine bleeding is caused by hormonal changes, you will not be able to prevent it. But if your hormonal changes are caused by being overweight, losing weight could help. Your weight affects your hormone production. Maintaining a healthy weight can help prevent abnormal uterine bleeding.
Abnormal uterine bleeding treatment
There are several treatment options for abnormal bleeding. Your treatment will depend on the cause of your bleeding, your age, and whether you want to get pregnant in the future. Your doctor will help you decide which treatment is right for you. Or, if your doctor decides that a hormone imbalance is causing your abnormal bleeding, you and your doctor may decide to wait and see if the bleeding improves on its own. Some treatment options include the following:
Intrauterine device (IUD). Your doctor may suggest an IUD. An IUD is a small, plastic device that your doctor inserts into your uterus through your va**na to prevent pregnancy. One type of IUD releases hormones, and this type can significantly reduce abnormal bleeding. Like birth control pills, sometimes IUDs can actually cause abnormal bleeding. Tell your doctor if this happens to you.
Birth control pills. Birth control pills contain hormones that can stop the lining of your uterus from getting too thick. They also can help keep your menstrual cycle regular and reduce cramping. Some types of birth control pills, especially the progestin-only pill (also called the “mini-pill”) can actually cause abnormal bleeding for some women. Let your doctor know if the pill you’re taking doesn’t control your abnormal bleeding.
A D&C, or dilatation and curettage. A D&C is a procedure in which the opening of your cervix is stretched just enough so a surgical tool can be put into your uterus. Your doctor uses this tool to scrape away the lining of your uterus. The removed lining is checked in a lab for abnormal tissue. A D&C is done under general anesthesia (while you’re in a sleep-like state).
If you’re having heavy bleeding, your doctor may perform a D&C both to find out the problem and to treat the bleeding. The D&C itself often makes heavy bleeding stop. Your doctor will decide if this procedure is necessary.
Hysterectomy. This type of surgery removes the uterus. If you have a hysterectomy, you won’t have any more periods and you won’t be able to get pregnant. Hysterectomy is major surgery that requires general anesthesia and a hospital stay. It may require a long recovery period. Talk to your doctor about the risks and benefits of hysterectomy.
Endometrial ablation is a surgical procedure that destroys the lining of the uterus. Unlike a hysterectomy, it does not remove the uterus. Endometrial ablation may stop all menstrual bleeding in some women. However, some women still have light menstrual bleeding or spotting after endometrial ablation. A few women have regular menstrual periods after the procedure. Women who have endometrial ablation still need to use some form of birth control even though, in most cases, pregnancy is not likely after the procedure.
Your doctor can do endometrial ablation in several different ways. Newer endometrial ablation techniques do not require general anesthesia or a hospital stay. The recovery time after this procedure is shorter than recovery time after a hysterectomy.
