SHORT COURSE IN STRESS MANAGEMENT
Stress is any condition that put our body in fight and fright mode.
if it is for a short time it is called acute stress.
if it is for a long time we call it chronic stress.
acute stress is good because it prepares us to avoid danger thereby protecting our body. Stress put an extra demand on the body for energy so if it is chronic it depletes our energy stores ,it depletes the body nutrients also because they are all used up for energy production.
Also because the body over produce energy during stress it also over produced waste products called free radicals.This over produced free radicals attack your immune system thereby depressing it.It also attack your enzyme systems leading to continuous inability of the body to cope with stress,the body systems begin to break down leading to chronic degenerative diseases and aging.
HOW YOUR BODY RESPOND TO STRESS
The stressor is the external agent that put your body under stress. It could be approach of danger a physical stimuli and it may be emotional which can be financial, familiar or marital in nature.
Your body respond to stress by releasing stress hormones from your adrenal gland.the hormones are of two types.
1.The short run hormone that prepares your body for immediate flight I.e avoiding the stressor and its release causes fright.The name of the hormone is adrenaline.
2.The second hormone prepares your body to cope with stress for a long time and the name is cortisol ,it is steroidal in nature.
DISEASES CAUSED BY STRESS.
Adrenaline and cortisol released into your body during stress causes
Your Blood Pressure and sugar level to rise,Your kidney start conserving salt and water.Your liver begin to stored up food by producing fat and storing them up in your adipose tissue
If the body adipose tissue becomes saturated it stops listening to insulin and instruct the body to start depositing the fats on the blood vessels.If this situation continue for a long time i.e become chronic
The following Disease condition can emerge
Hyperlipidemia high fat and cholesterol in the blood leading to formation of atherosclerosis which can cause thrombus or clot formation.If the clot block the flow of blood to brain it cause stroke.If the clot block the flow of blood to the heart it causes heart attack.If it block the flow of blood to lower limbs it is called deep vein thrombosis.
Excessive storage of fats in tissues can cause obesity,this combine with hyperlipidemia predisposes the body to hypertension and diabetes
The excessive free radicals produced during stress attacks your immune cells leading to immune depression,also Cortisol produced during stress also further depresses your immune system.Immune depression leads to high rate of infections and development of Cancer.
Adrenaline and cortisol also affect your mental function by causing depression ,anxiety and in some case hyperactive tendencies with attention deficit.
Now that we know the bad results that stress produces ,how can we manage it.
HOW TO MANAGE STRESS
The simple rule is to respond to the stress and never react to it
Respond here means love the stress.
React here means hate the stress.
When you hate the stress your body produces all the negative chemicals of Adrenaline and cortisol continuously and this will destroy your body.
If you love the stress by responding to it you train your body to stop producing the negative chemicals but to produce pleasure chemicals on the long run called ENDORPHINS they are the body natural Morphine, Co***ne or Heroine that allows your body to not feel the pain of the stress but also makes your body become euphoric.Instead of your body being destroyed ,it only evolve or metamorphose into a better body ready for a new level of activity.
So what are the things I must do to make my body produce more endorphins
During stress your body needs extra energy to cope with the stress ,to produce more energy your body consumes more nutrient and produces more free radicals.
So the first thing is to nourish my body with balance diet with high level of vitamins , minerals and antioxidants.
The second thing to do is to exercise
Exercise removes toxic materials from your body,put your body in a good physical shape and fitness and it releases ENDORPHINS
Seek emotional and physical intimacy from your spouse ,talking to another person about a stressors often brings in a new perspective in solving the problem.Also important is the fact that great S*X is a good way of releasing high dose if ENDORPHINS into your brain
Lastly adapt to the stressor by learning the extra demand been place on your,then look for a way to provide for them.
It may means adding extra knowledge or even allocating more time to the work.It may also involve delegating the issue to an external expert that can handle it,It can also means allocating more money for better result.
THINGS YOU MUST NOT DO WHEN STRESSED(HOW NOT TO RESPOND TO STRESS)
1.cutting down on your sleeping time in order to do more,lack of quality sleep and rest is a stressors itself
2.seek comfort in dangerous food like alcohol,nicotine,sugar and caffeine.Drinking too much soda .coffee and heavy smoking and social drinking will only provide short term relieve and add to your stress in the long run by the accompanied health hazards they bring.
3. Indulged in the use if Hard drugs like amphetamine co***ne he**in to help you escape from reality and create an artificial euphoric environment
4.avoiding people not talking to anybody internalizing your problem
5.engaging in s*x with multiple partners,this will dilute your focus and energy,Though s*x is a good way to produce ENDORPHINS but having multiple partners is counter productive on the long run because it drains your focus,energy and resources further compounding the stress.
