The same cement floor. The same hot oil. The same _shame_ smell on her hands.

But today, Tenny wore small lipgloss. She didn’t know why.

Tenny! 20 pieces for the market women!
Mama K coughed from the mat.

Yes Ma! Tenny counted puff puff into nylon. ₦4,000 today. Mama K’s drugs still ₦8,000.

Then he came.

Not the usual 5 AM crowd shouting Fast fast!”
This one stood quiet. Clean white polo. No gold chain. Just... eyes.

_Good morning. The puff puff from yesterday... His voice was soft. Like someone who doesn’t shout. _“Do you still have some?

Tenny froze. Oil dripped from her spoon.
It was HIM. The voice from last night’s hook. The one who asked _Who makes that puff puff?_

Y-yes. ₦200, Her wrapper was stained. Her hands were oily. She hid them behind her.

He didn’t look at her wrapper. He looked at her hands. The burns. The knife cuts.

I will take 30 pieces._ He dropped ₦6,000. Keep the change.

Tenny’s heart beat like Mama K’s generator. ₦6,000?

Why? She whispered. _“Nobody buys 30 pieces at 5 AM.

He smiled. Small. Tired. I like how it smells like. home._

Then he left. No phone number. No _give me your WhatsApp”
Just puff puff and ₦6,000.

4:30 PM. Same Day. Lekki.

_Bros, you dey craze? Tunde laughed, dropping his car keys. _You drove to Mushin by 5 AM for puff puff? And you paid ₦6k for ₦200 thing?_

Kunle — that was his name — stared at the nylon. The puff puff was cold now. But he wasn’t thinking about food.

_You see her hands? Kunle said quietly. Burns. Like she’s been fighting fire her whole life.

Tunde hissed. _My guy, shine your eye. That girl na poor girl. She dey fry puff puff for gutter. Her mama sick. No degree. You be lawyer from London! Your mama go gree? The one wey smell like kitchen? Haba!_

Kunle didn’t answer. He just picked one puff puff. Cold. But it still smelled like 3:47 AM and survival.

Outside his window, Lagos was shouting.
Inside his chest, something quiet was starting.

He didn’t know Tenny was home, counting ₦6,000 with shaking hands, whispering:
_God... who is this man?”_

The generator at Mama Emeka’s shop coughed and died. Again.

Tenny wiped sweat with the back of her palm. It smelled like hot oil and yeast and _shame_.

3:47 AM.

While other 27-year-olds were posting “soft life” on Instagram, Tenny was kneeling on cement floor, frying puff puff for the 5 AM market women. Her knees had scars. Her phone had 2% battery. Her slippers had holes.

_Tenny! The oil dey burn!”_ Mama K’s voice from the mat was weak but sharp. Stage 2 diabetes. No money for hospital.

_Coming Ma!_ Tenny flipped the puff puff. One dropped. She picked it, blew dust, put it back. Customers won’t know. Hunger doesn’t do perfect.

Her phone buzzed. 1% battery.

Ade: _LOL you still dey fry puff puff? I can’t date a girl wey smell like kitchen. Find God._

Blocked.

Sandra from secondary school: _Girl, you no go school so wetin you expect? Na so life be._

Data finished.

Tenny stared at her cracked hands. Oil burns. Knife cuts. No degree. No boyfriend. No sleep. Just puff puff, Mama K’s cough, and a Tecno phone that freezes when she needs it most.

She packed the last puff puff into a nylon. ₦3,200 for the morning. Mama K’s drugs cost ₦8,000.

She laughed. It sounded like crying.

Outside, a neighbor shouted: _“Tenny! Your life no go better! Na so you go fry till you die!”_

Tenny closed her eyes. The darkness smelled like hot oil and _prayers_.
She didn’t know that 3 streets away, someone had just asked:
_“Who makes that puff puff that smells like home? I want to meet her.”_
