black Soup
‘Marugbo’ soup also known as ‘eweta’ is called “luru’ in my own native dialect. It is a traditional soup with its’ origin from Ondo state, Nigeria. its a black soup cooked with dried leaves which are blended together to form a delicious pot of soup.
Yes, it is of notes that the leaves are seldom used fresh; they are typically used after being completely sun dried, this is what gives the soup a very dark green to black coloring. Due to the concentration of vegetables in the soup, marugbo soup has a laxative effect on the body; this is why the soup is said to be medicinal expecially for women that just gave birth. It aids their healing process.
I have also heard it said that, this soup has its own various version; from the Ondo, ikales, ilaje, itsekiri to the orhobos. They are all black soup really , but the combination of leaves and method differs…
The process of cooking the soup itself might be similar to other vegetable-based nigerian soup like afang soup where a earthy broth is prepared and the pureed vegetable is added to thicken the broth. but, today, I will like to teach you how it is done in Ondo, Akoko, to be precise lol!
So lets cook…
But before we move on into cooking , let me highlight some basic nutrient of this soup
Marugbo soup stimulate lost appetite and replenish vitality for mothers who just put to bed
The leaves high content of zinc and iron is good in keeping the skin fresh
The soup also serves as a colon cleanser
