Are Expensive Skincare Products Typically Better Than Cheaper Alternatives?

Not always.

For example, there is a very expensive cream called La Mer in which celebrities tout their love for La Mer .

With my background and professional experience, I tend to look at the ingredients list over what celebrities, beauty bloggers, and advertisement tout as a “great product”.

La Mer cream being sold on the Neiman Marcus website is being sold for $2095.00 for 16.5 ounce and most online stores are selling the smaller size for $85.

The third ingredient is Petrolatum. The same ingredient in Vaseline Intesive care, Jergens, and other inexpensive lotions and creams.

They also have hydrogenated vegetable oil (think Crisco), and cholesterol…..cholesterol from what? They don’t specify.

All these ingredient do not hydrate the skin. Yes they don’t.

These ingredients are occlusive which means it holds moisture and oil in.

Given that you already have moisture in the skin, this product will hold the moisture in but it does NOT add moisture to the skin.

HOWEVER, the only way to tell is look at the ingredients list.

When anti aging products contain anti aging ingredients towards the top or top half of the middle of the ingredients list, you will pay more.

If the product contains a high amount of peptides and stem cells, along with stabilizers to keep the bio activity level high for these performance ingredients, the price also goes up.

After looking at many labels, TYPICALLY, you will find that the drug store products are the least expensive because they have the least amount performance ingredients in the product.

I have found that most department store products are about the same and sometimes are MORE expensive than the pharmecuetical or spa products yet the ingredients are much more concentrated in the products they sell at the Dermatologist, plastic surgeone or estheticians practice.

Deparment store brands spend more money on the packaging AND advertisement where the spa and pharmeceutical product spends more on research and development.

Finally, It’s worthy to note that most creams we import into Nigeria are department store brands. Yes! That is why your fair and white can cost you N70k while the other your friend bought in france or US’s might costs N25k 😃
