"If e didn't dey, e didn't dey"

i.e, "If it's not there, it's not there"

This was a comment someone made on a long post she made regarding her hair growth.

She had posted a picture of her hair which was full and thick.

She got a lot of comments on how she was able to grow her hair long, etc.

So, she made a post giving out hair tips in which her last point was,

"Genetics are the most important factor. If e didn't dey, e didn't dey and there's nothing you can do about it".

I do not agree with that completely.

Before I address why, let me tell you the role your genetics play when it comes to your hair.

📌 Your genes are responsible for how full your hair is.

You can't make them fuller.

But, with bad hair practices, they can get scantier.

📌 Your genes are responsible for your hair texture i.e how thick or thin your hair strands are.

You can't make them thicker.

But, with bad practices, they can get thinner and even disappear eventually.

📌 Your genes are responsible for how fast your hair grows,

You can't make it grow faster.

But, the amount you get to keep from what's given, is totally determined by your practices routine, etc.

📌 Your genes are responsible for determining how long your hair can get...

You can't make your growth phase longer

But, how long your hair eventually gets and as at when it does is totally determined you.

In conclusion, you are responsible for every result you get with your hair either good or bad.

The responsibility of your genes are quite limited.

============

Now back to what I partially disagree with,

As long as you have hair growing out of your scalp, you have the potential to grow your hair long.

The only way "if e didn't dey, e didn't dey" is for those that have alopecia and born bald.

Now, for those ones have issues with their follicles being inflamed that prevents their hair from growing but some of them with intense care can get their follicles cured and start to grow their hair again.

Inasmuch as we blame our genes so much for not having hair as we like,

Our day-to-day living shows us different ways that people alter whatever was given to them by their genes...

From skin color to hair type and body shapes.

So, what's your hair really?

Research has even proven that 20-30% of our hair growth is from our genes while the remaining 70-80% is dependent on our lifestyle and this applies to almost everything.

The only thing genes give is leverage. That's why some people will not have to work as hard to get a certain result.

Our hairs won't have the same thickness or the same length.

(And this is what brings about the beauty in my opinion)

But you see health, growth and beauty of the hair is achievable by all as long as proper hair care is put in place.

The best thing about our hair is that regardless of your volume, it appears full and thick as long as it is healthy!

Quote me anywhere.

So, don't give up on your hair due to statements like this.

Actually, you're allowed to give up if you want to but it should be on a more legit ground.

Cheers to your growth 🍻

Whenever someone says to me,

"The reason you have long hair is because of your genes",

I say to them,

"How about you do EVERYTHING I do to my hair, if you have the same dry, breaking, unhealthy, stunted growth hair, then, I'll agree with you".

For context sake,

My hair type is low porosity, coarse textured, high density, curl type 4A/4B.

This means that I have the type of hair that even without caring for it,

It will still appear full and look "healthy" because my hair strands are thick and this means that they can withstand harsh conditions.

Despite that, I am very careful with my hair as though just a little wrong practice would cause severe hair damage.

I don't make styles that stretch my edges even though my edges are very full.

I don't make tight or tiny hairstyles despite having very full and thick hair which a lot of people see as an opportunity to display such skills with.

I don't make my hair without washing and deep deconditioning.

I have never combed my hair when dry.

Amongst a host of other things.

Yet, you that have low density, fine textured hair go ahead to do all of these and you wonder why your hair is scanty, damaged and almost balding.

It's not genetics.

It's all about your practices.

So, before you limit my hardwork to genetics,

Do what I do as well and see if your "genetics" won't change as well😂.

But then, does genetics have their role to play in our hair growth?

I'll discuss that in my next post.

Today, let's talk about child labor.

At what point really is it exploitative?

Is it only when children are made to do "menial" jobs such as selling, hawking, sweeping, etc that it is frowned against?

Does it include children in media such as content creators, actors and models?

Because those ones are admired and even looked up to in a way even when we see some of them admitting to exploitation in the industry.

I had to go look up the definition of child labor, and according to Netherlands Enterprise Agency,

Child labour is "work that deprives children of their childhood, their potential and their dignity, and that is harmful to physical and mental development".

Other definitions were about them not being up to the required age stated by the law.

This is a thought that came to me when I came across the video of the oversabi "activist" that posted the video of the woman who took her child with her at dawn to go sweep the road.

What are your thoughts on this?

What's an unpopular opinion you have about your natural hair?

02/07/2025

You lost your edges few years ago.

You took your time to grow them out.

Now that they are back, you are going ahead to make the same styles that took them out before.

Why?!

Didn't the time you spent retrieving them teach you to value and pamper them?

This is not a situation of "we only live once so I should make the styles I like and want".

Well, why can't you include styles that are healthy and favorable for your scalp?

That line is only used by those that do not care about losing their edges or whatever damage that comes out of doing whatever they want to their hair.

Your definition of having fun with your hair does not have to lean towards the damaging and negative side.

You can have fun with your hair while pampering your hair and being kind to your scalp.

The subject of "having fun with your hair" is very subjective and highly dependent on your definition of fun.

If the result of your "fun" actions are not "fun" to you then, you should re-consider the things you do for fun.

Having fun shouldn't rid you of important things and things you consider precious.

Now, tell me...

How do you have fun with your hair?

Hair loss is not breakage,

Shedding is not breakage!

This was the post I made yesterday and I got some questions regarding it.

All you have to do is ask yourself what each of these terms mean and their causes to get your answer.

=====

📌 Hair loss:
This implies loss of hair literally which results in balding. It is caused by chronic shedding of the hair strands.

📌 Shedding:
This is when your hair strands detach from their follicles from the ROOT.

The bulb of the hair strand is seen attached to the hair when it's a shed hair.

Its a natural phenomenon which calls for no alarm EXCEPT when it's happening more than usual.

Causes include the growth of a new hair strand and the end of the telogen phase.

Causes of chronic or excessive shedding that results in hair loss tends to be internal mostly but there are external factors as well.

Internal factors: diet, health (blood disease, organ disease, hormonal, etc), stress, etc

External Factors: the type of hair products being used, tight hairstyles, terrible hair practices etc.

📌 Breakage:

This is when your hair literally breaks either at its ends or middle as a result of wrong hair handling and practices.

With this, you still have hair on your head but it's either getting shorter or its growth is stunted.

It's caused by a number of wrong hair handling and practices.

With these breakdown of definitions, I hope you realie the difference and start to use the right terms when describing your hair problems.

========

👉🏿 Can your hair recover from hair loss?

Yes, if noticed early and treated immediately.

👉🏿 Can your hair recover from breakage?

Absolutely! Breakage can't be prevented 100% but it can be drastically reduced to enable increased length retention.

👉🏿 How do you reduce breakage and start to grow your hair long?

By recognizing what's causing your hair to break and fixing it immediately.

In my book, NO MORE BREAKAGE, I addressed over 20 different COMMON causes of breakage that you are guilty of and how you can eliminate them and start to grow your hair long and healthy.

It's currently selling at just 5,000 Naira.
