*Glaucoma*
Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that can cause vision loss and blindness by damaging the optic nerve. Glaucoma can start gradually and if nothing is done, can lead to vision loss or blindness. The only way to be sure that you don't have glaucoma is to have your eye checked every six months. Most times before the patient could notice the symptoms, 50 to 70 percent of vision is gone.
Glaucoma is a hereditary disease . That is, if it runs in your family your eye check will be more regular than six months. If ur age is 40 years and above , then you are at more risk of having glaucoma, especially when it runs in your family. Glaucoma can also occur at ages between 20 and 40 or below.
Other things apart from heredity that can cause glaucoma are trauma , hypertension and untreated uveitis.

*Garri* and the *Eye*
Garri is a food from _cassava_ that undergoes several processes before it is ready for consumption. Garri contains cyanide of variable quantities depending on how well it is processed. Garri also contains sugar. When garri is mixed with hot water to prepare eba, the heat from hot water denatures the effect of cyanide but not when garri is sipped. When palmoil is added to garri it also stops the effect of cyanide, so sipping garri that contains palmoil is safe. Fufu from cassava is also safe because heating has killed the cyanide in it.
Cyanide from garri affects the optic nerve of the eye and reduces its conductivity causing poor vision, causes cloudiness of cornea, its combination with amino acids can cause cataract of the lens. Garri also reduces vitamin A in the body, reducing the activity of retina, so it is important you add milk while sipping garri. This effect is more in the night or during cold weather. Chickenpox, also called varicella, is characterized by itchy red blisters that appear all over the body. A virus causes this condition. It often affects children, and was so common it was considered a childhood rite of passage.
It’s very rare to have the chickenpox infection more than once. And since the chickenpox vaccine was introduced in the mid-1990s, cases have declined.
An itchy rash is the most common symptom of chickenpox. The infection will have to be in your body for around seven to 21 days before the rash and other symptoms develop. You start to be contagious to those around you up to 48 hours before the skin rash starts to occur.
The non-rash symptoms may last a few days and include:
fever
headache
loss of appetite
One or two days after you experience these symptoms, the classic rash will begin to develop. The rash goes through three phases before you recover. These include:
You develop red or pink bumps all over your body.
The bumps become blisters filled with fluid that leaks.
The bumps become crusty, scab over, and begin to heal.
The bumps on your body will not all be in the same phase at the same time. New bumps will continuously appear throughout your infection. The rash may be very itchy, especially before it scabs over with a crust.
You are still contagious until all the blisters on your body have scabbed over. The crusty scabbed areas eventually fall off. It takes seven to 14 days to disappear completely.
What causes chickenpox?
Varicella-zoster virus (VZV) causes the chickenpox infection. Most cases occur through contact with an infected person. The virus is contagious to those around you for one to two days before your blisters appear. VZV remains contagious until all blisters have crusted over. The virus can spread through:
saliva
coughing
sneezing
contact with fluid from the blisters
Cancer is a broad term. It describes the disease that results when cellular changes cause the uncontrolled growth and division of cells.
Some types of cancer cause rapid cell growth, while others cause cells to grow and divide at a slower rate.
Certain forms of cancer result in visible growths called tumors, while others, such as leukemia, do not.
Most of the body’s cells have specific functions and fixed lifespans. While it may sound like a bad thing, cell death is part of a natural and beneficial phenomenon called apoptosis.
A cell receives instructions to die so that the body can replace it with a newer cell that functions better. Cancerous cells lack the components that instruct them to stop dividing and to die.
As a result, they build up in the body, using oxygen and nutrients that would usually nourish other cells. Cancerous cells can form tumors, impair the immune system and cause other changes that prevent the body from functioning regularly.
Cancerous cells may appear in one area, then spread via the lymph nodes. These are clusters of immune cells located throughout the body.
Causes
There are many causes of cancer, and some are preventable.
For example, over 480,000 peopleTrusted Source die in the U.S. each year from smoking ci******es, according to data reported in 2014.
In addition to smoking, risk factors for cancer include:
heavy alcohol consumption
excess body weight
physical inactivity
poor nutrition
Other causes of cancer are not preventable. Currently, the most significant unpreventable risk factor is age. According to the American Cancer Society, doctors in the U.S. diagnose 87 percentTrusted Source of cancer cases in people ages 50 years or older.
Below are examples of approaches to cancer treatment:
Chemotherapy aims to kill cancerous cells with medications that target rapidly dividing cells. The drugs can also help shrink tumors, but the side effects can be severe.
