WHY UWAZURUIKE’S BIAFRA STRUGGLE IS A PERSONAL BUSINESS AS BARR. EMEKA EMEKESIRI SAYS

There is a statement that deserves more than a passing response. Which is: “Uwazuruike’s Biafran struggle is his personal business.”

Barrister Dr. Emeka Emekesiri has expressed this view in podcasts and public discussions, and the issue also came up during the online interview conducted by the Minister of Information, Comrade Ijeomah Anthony, on 29 June 2026.

Then we want to ask: If a man establishes a non-violent revolutionary self-determination group, develops its strategy, defines its methods, stages and remains its leader, does that automatically make the organisation his personal business?

On 13 September 1999, Chief Dr. Ralph Uwazuruike launched the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB.

He did not merely announce a name. He developed a particular approach to the Biafra question, especially the principles of non-violence and non-exodus, and mapped out stages through which he believed the aspiration could be pursued.

People subsequently joined. They participated. They created structures. They accepted responsibilities. They became part of the organisation.

So BIM–MASSOB's argument is straightforward: If Uwazuruike created MASSOB, why should insisting on leading the organisation he founded automatically be interpreted as turning Biafran struggle into his personal business?

And importantly, Uwazuruike did not prevent Barrister Emeka Emekesiri, Igbo lawyers forum, council of elders or any other person from becoming members of MASSOB and participating within its organisational structure.

According to Barrister Emekesiri's account, the highly successful compliance with MASSOB's 26 August 2004 sit-at-home was a major reason he became interested in the movement.

Why? Because the response demonstrated to him that the Biafra question had acquired enormous public attention and participation.

From his account, this created the perception that the struggle had become too significant to be left entirely under Uwazuruike's direction and control. He, alongside other professionals and elders, believed that greater legal, diplomatic and strategic involvement was necessary.

But BIM–MASSOB asks: If people voluntarily joined Uwazuruike's organisation, why should their participation mean that another person automatically acquired the right to control and guide it from behind?

Uwazuruike and 10 other MASSOB members were facing criminal proceedings in Nigeria. On 17 July 2007, he wrote to the Igbo lawyers forum through you, Emekesiri that Mr. Festus Keyamo should continue to lead his defence, while asking that no notice of change or additional counsel be filed.

And here is BIM–MASSOB's question: Who had the right to decide who would defend Uwazuruike in his own criminal case?

A defendant has a legitimate interest in determining who represents him, subject to the applicable rules of the court and legal profession.

Therefore, even if Emekesiri and others believed they could provide better legal or international representation, their belief did not automatically give them authority to replace the counsel Uwazuruike had chosen.

And that brings us back to the accusation of “personal business.” Is choosing your own lawyer proof that your political movement belongs to you personally?

If Uwazuruike's intention was to make Biafra his personal business, why establish an organisation through which other people could join and participate?

Why create structures? Why allow people to become members? Why allow members to occupy organisational positions? Why permit people from different professions and backgrounds to participate?

The BIM–MASSOB position is that Uwazuruike's insistence on maintaining strategic leadership was about protecting the direction and method he had established, not claiming personal ownership of every person's political aspiration.

Barrister Dr. Emeka Emekesiri has explained publicly his involvement in the Biafra question and his role in the emergence of IPOB in 2012.
From his perspective, the organisation represented another approach to pursuing the Biafra objective.

That is part of the history that deserves documentation. But BIM–MASSOB's counterargument is equally straightforward:

If Emekesiri and others could establish another organisation, IPOB because they disagreed with Uwazuruike's leadership and methodology, why should Uwazuruike's continued leadership of MASSOB be described as a private business?

Why should Emeka Emekesiri allowed a Radio Biafra London broadcasts he sponsored to subsequently attack Uwazuruike and portray him negatively. By so doing, they undermined the founder of the organisation through which the modern non-violent Biafra campaign was launched.

If Barrister Dr. Emeka Emekesiri believes Uwazuruike's Biafra became a personal enterprise, BIM–MASSOB is entitled to challenge that interpretation.

The movement's answer is that Uwazuruike did not simply wake up one morning and declare Biafra his personal property.

He founded MASSOB in 1999, established its strategy, developed its organisational framework and continued to lead it while other people voluntarily joined and participated.

A founder's decision to retain leadership of the organisation he created is not, by itself, proof that the political aspiration shared by its members belongs to him personally.

We Don't Need to Flee to Seek Self-Determination: BIM-MASSOB Defends Founding Philosophy

‎LAGOS - As the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (BIM-MASSOB) marks its 27th anniversary on September 13, 2026, the organization has issued a robust defense of its foundational philosophy: the principle of "non-exodus."

‎The statement comes in direct response to comments made by Barrister Dr. Emeka Emekesiri during an official online interview on June 29, 2026, conducted by the Minister of Information, Comrade Ijeomah Anthony.

‎The Controversy Over Non-Exodus
‎During the interview, Emekesiri argued that combining non-violence with non-exodus is contradictory, claiming it creates confusion regarding the pursuit of a sovereign Biafra. He recounted how early disagreements over the doctrine and MASSOB's leadership contributed to his involvement in establishing IPOB in 2012.

‎BIM-MASSOB dismissed these claims, stating that critics fundamentally misunderstood the doctrine.
‎"Non-exodus does not mean a person cannot aspire to political self-determination because they live outside their ancestral territory," the movement stated. "You do not have to abandon your life, businesses, or marriages to express a political aspiration."

‎BIM-MASSOB in a statement signed by the Minister of Information, Comrade Anthony Ijeomah and made available to BT Afrika the organization pointed to founder Chief Dr. Ralph Uwazuruike, who launched MASSOB in Lagos on September 13, 1999, before returning to Imo State. Uwazuruike’s family, businesses, and properties have remained in Lagos to this day—a practical demonstration of non-exodus. Millions of BIM-MASSOB members similarly live, work, and intermarry across Nigeria without cutting ties to their communities.

‎Addressing the broader geopolitical strategy, BIM-MASSOB emphasized that political disagreements should not automatically translate to conflict.
‎Drawing an analogy of two brothers discussing their living arrangements, the movement argued that political separation—if ever achieved—should be pursued through continuous, peaceful dialogue rather than "fire, guns, or destruction."

‎The statement also touched on past leadership friction, alleging that historical disagreements over MASSOB's control led to hostile media narratives. BIM-MASSOB claimed that early platforms associated with Radio Biafra London were utilized to tarnish Uwazuruike's reputation- allegations they assert Emekesiri failed to fact-check despite his knowledge of the platform's origins.

‎In contrast to the insecurity and destruction witnessed across parts of the Southeast in recent years, BIM-MASSOB maintains that non-violence and non-exodus remain the only viable blueprint for a peaceful future.

‎As the movement celebrates 27 years of existence, it insists that history must be examined objectively, reminding the public that political disagreements should never justify violence against ordinary citizens.
